CPU Upgrade question

Hey, currently have an a64 3200+, it's an old one s754 so it won't go past 2.2ghz, 1 gig of ram and a x1900xt ati.

Some of the more ram/cpu intensive games are starting to chug a little and i haven't been paying much attention to the current trends.

A while ago I was looking for the amd mobile 4000+ but still no UK retailer it seems carrying it and maybe now it's cheap enough to go to 939 or further? I'd like to stick to AMD and something I can oc a fair bit would be nice.

Not looking to spend an awful lot but the gfx card is being limited quite a bit atm so like to lessen that a bit :) any advice?

Even if you were lucky enough to find the Newark 4000+ you will find it near on impossible to get it to work on a desktop motherboard. Someone on here already tried that with no joy.

What about getting a 754 3700+ at auction? 2.4 at stock and mine hit 2.795ghz max stable. It would have done more but the Epox 8NPA-Sli would only let me give it an extra 0.5v. It certainly handled everything i could throw at it. I have just gone over to 939 with a 4000+ but only because i got it and a mobo for a bargain £130. The only reason i did it was because my 754 3700+ is worth more at auction than the move to 939 cost me. Couple that with the 754 Sli mobo which i can't find anywhere on sale in the UK anymore and i should be coming out of this with a tidy profit. :D

Tbh m8 I think it is your lack of 2GB of memory that is limiting you more than the CPU.

Thats still a resonable CPU although you'd certainly find a difference by upgrading to a 3700, but depending on your budget you might see the largest gain by going to 2GB, nearly all the recent games benefit from it.
