CPU Upgrade Time (From i7 920...)

Hey all,

I last upgraded my PC properly in 2009 before I went to university, since then I avoided our little (expensive) hobby for a while as I only ever played games and did research for uni.

Now however, I have a job (yay disposable income) and am doing a lot more in the way of CPU intensive work in my spare time. I work as an electronic engineer so do a fair amount of CAD work in my spare time to try and improve my skills as fast as possible. Additionally I am going to be doing a fair amount of image and video processing for my website.

So as I am currently on the i7 920 it is very much time for me to upgrade, I just want to get your opinions on what chip I should go for I am edging towards the 5820k but with the new CPUs due out in Q2 is it worth waiting out for them? I would be looking at the PC lasting another 2-3 years really.

Thanks all!

To be honest I wouldnt wait as there probably be not much improvement 10% improvement? Also intel wants to go eco on energy so possibly same performance just lower tdp? If you go for 5820k which is x99 platform you can always upgrade to 8 core later. Skylake is not worth the money.

I7 5820k will be significant upgrade and you shouldn't be disappointed with the performance of it and as above you can always upgrade to 8 core i 3-4 or more years later but likely new platform + cpu will be better option. I upgraded 2 years ago from q6600 to i7 4770k and I saw huge performance increase.

I'd go for the X99 platform considering your uses.

5820k for now and a few years down the line you'll be able to pop a 10 core Broadwell-E chip in if required.

I went from a 950 to a Xeon x5660 and after selling the old Processor the upgrade cost about £10. Massive difference, I can't see myself needing to upgrade for a long time.

I need a new PC for my latest mod anyway so I am currently thinking about doing the Xeon thing and upgrading to x99 just before Insomnia in the summer

It's something im considering myself. My second system is an X58 i7 920 setup. Would give it a new lease of life for very little outlay.

I'm keeping mine until it dies. Can't see the point of upgrading. especially if I wanted to stay at 6 cores

That's just the sort of thing I wanted to hear - just picked up a Xeon 5650 today, looking forward to getting it fitted to see how it compares with my i7 920.

Do the Xeon thing, see if it's quick enough, if not x99 it is!
Just as Ste states. Pretty much anybody who has an X58 board and does CPU intensive tasks should pop in a X5650/70, overclock it to say 4.2-4.4 with little effort and enjoy the £400 in their pocket (they can be picked up for ~£50) One guy said my Cinebench score of 1059 for the X5670 I have was more than his stock 5820k.

I have started browsing the bay for them. It will get watercooled anyway so the overclock shouldn't be an issue.

If you look in the massive Xeon thread, you will see a link to a seller on the Bay doing them for @£60. He has 60 of them, probably from a large company server pull blitz. I've just bought one. If it puts out the performance its getting touted to do, it could be an utter bargain. You, like me, have already got the most expensive part of the package - the X58 mobo. The Xeon seems like a 'no brainer' for the cost. For the sake of £60, I'm willing to take the chance. ;)

The ones at £57.99 have sold out (44 between midnight and now :() looks like I will go searching and should have just bought one last night!
