Hi,

Going to upgrade to a 5800X 3D to continue on this platform for a while.
Going to double my ram to 32gb - am I ok to add in another x2 8gb sticks (same as in sig), or would I be better going for x2 16gb sticks?
(I will be upgrading the gfx card soon to a 3090 or similar)

Thanks

Performance wise 4 dimms should perform slightly better but many a user has had problems with Ryzen and 4 sticks.

I would be upgrading your psu of your getting a 3090 the power spikes can be very high.

What resoloution you gaming at ?

Cheaper to add 2x8GB sticks, you won't notice the performance difference between 2x16 and 4x8 sticks.

On 4x8, it will be slightly hard to overclock so you may have to tweak your RAM settings, that's the only hard bit.

2x16 is less likely to give you problems than adding an additional 2x8, just a fact, but I'd be less concerned about running 4 8GB sticks than 4 16GB.

Better to go x2 16Gb sticks. I have x2 8 sticks and tried another x2 8gb sticks and my ryzen pc had problems with the 4 sticks - the exact same ones too.

Only £40 cheaper to add 2x8, however if I pay the extra for 2x16 I can sell my current 2x8 + so will work out cheaper anyway :)
I use four sticks (RGB pretty lol). And it is fine. 3200 MHz, DOCP settings and the 5600X is happy. No freezes, no blue screens and as long as the RAM matches, I don't see an issue. I checked the RAM with Memtest 86, no errors. BIOS, no issues.

I'm running 4*8gb with my 5800X3D on my B350F motherboard. I've just only now learnt about single/dual rank, will my sticks be single rank as they're 8gb sticks?

Also, one thing I'm doing which is generally considered a big no no is I'm running 2*8gb G-Skill Trident Z & 2*8GB HyperX, but have not seen any problems at all, I did make sure they were the same specs at XMP.

Yes but in the same sentence, 2 by 16gig kits are also single rank these days because creating larger DRAM chips is so easy these days and 2 by 64bit memory controllers are expensive.

I've got an old 2 by 16gig Samsung D die kit that's 3200 by CL17 and dual rank and it's faster than my 4 by 8gig TeamGroup 8pack B die with tight timings.

I really wouldn't get hung up about RAM. It makes a tiny performance improvement overall and you'd probably get the same performance increase by spending money on keeping your GPU cool with an extra fan pointed at it.

No you are running in dual rank not single rank because 4 single rank sticks is 2 ranks per channel which is dual rank. Therefore you should get somewhat better performance than just running 2 sticks of single rank RAM.
