Ive currently got an Athlon 64 3200+ winchester

im thinking of upgrading this to a 4000+ San Diego as i only really use the system for one thing at a time, either listenning to music, playing games or browsing the web so i think dual core is a bit of a waste of time no ?

secondly, would i be better to save me £200 and use it on a new one ? skt AM2 doesnt look to be worth waiting for, causing a new mobo and DDR memory upgrade for very little extra

but what about conroe ?

First of all, considering that this is Overclockers UK, I'm going to suggest that you overclock. Remember that if you get to 2.4 GHz, you are running as fast as a 3800. A 4000 San Diego would have twice the cache you currently have and run at 2.4 GHz. But if you were to bench it, the extra cache makes less than 10% of a difference in performance. Most of the time it would be less than 5%.

Conroe isn't out yet. It's looking good, but you are going to need a new processor, a new motherboard and new RAM. That's not going to be cheap, and it's unlikely to warrant the expenditure.

I think you should overclock first. If you don't get good results then consider a processor upgrade, ideally to an X2. That'd be a proper upgrade that would last you for a long long time. Dual core may not be a big concern for you today, but future games and programs will be far better multithreaded in their design, meaning that you will see much better performance with a dual core processor than a slightly faster single core processor.

And of course make sure you are running BOINC, see the distributed computing section of the forum for more details. Some non-scientific studies show that it helps pull women and increases your overclock.

I think dueal core is a waste for now, get a cheap single core in clearance section, and then go for a full mb/memory/cpu swap when needed next year or so....a 4000+ will last you for now....easily
