CPU Upgrade

Got a Got a Q6600 with a Gigabyte GA-965P-DS3 board and wondering what CPU should I look up upgrading to?

Tempted with an i7, but that involves new board, new RAM, heatsink conversion (got a Noctua)

i7 920 is a very nice cpu but id just oc yours if you can wait for the i5 i9 etc

Well if an i7 is going to be a complete upgrade, consider getting an AMD setup, my mate went from a q6600 at 3.3ghz to a 955 BE at 3.6 and he saw an improvement across the board, the only place it didnt beat the quad was in some encoding.

Do you still want quad or would dual be okay? The E8400 E0 is quick and cool running, so overclocks well for example

I do play GTA from time to time and I understand that needs a decent quad

Also after a decent RAID card for setting up a RAID 1 for Windows 7

I7 is the only noticable upgrade + your better of selling your socket 775 stuff before i5

now you would get £170 ish for your cpu mobo ram

I7 will be £450/500

If send noctura the recipt of your heatsink & a pic/ recipt of your i7 mobo they will send you the i7 bracket free.

if all you use your pc for is gaming id go the AMD route as its just about on par with the i7 and its cheaper.

I know I might be biased, but I really don't think you need to upgrade cpu yet. Maybe look at upgrading something else like monitor/GPU first?

I agree, I don't see a reason to have any more than an OC'd Q6600 at the moment, nothing really demands it, and GTA4 is a poorly coded port, not worth spending money on getting running well as it never really will if it doesn't with that setup.
