CPU Upgrade?

Hi,

I have a Sony Vaio VGN-A317M laptop. It's not the newest thing in the world and it's currently started to feel really slow compared to newer faster machines I've been using at work. I know it's never going to be a rocket ship, and it's probably not worth much but I'd like to know if it's possible to upgrade the CPU on it? I have already upgraded the memory to it's maximum 2GB and the CPU is the next thing that I can think of in order to make it feel quicker.

The spec is:
Intel Pentium-M Centrino Processor 740 1.73GHz / 533MHz FSB
2GB DDR SDRAM
80GB Hard Drive
DVD Dual Layer Drive
17.0"
ATI Mobility X600 PCI-E 128MB dedicated graphics
Integrated gigabit LAN and 56k v.90 data fax modem
Operating System: Windows XP Home Edition

I'm unsure of the type of chip that could be an upgrade for this laptop? Can anyone link to something suitable? I've looked on eBay and not sure what's suitable? Most I can find is a 2GHz CPU which looks the right thing but unsure if it's going to be the right one or whether it's even possible to upgrade the CPU on this laptop?

I'd like to upgrade from XP to Win7 and therefore just want the whole laptop being quicker (I already maintain it well, it's not gotten bogged down, just it's best speed is feeling slow these days).

Does anyone know what CPU I can use to upgrade and whether it's even possible/worth it or should I just start saving for a new machine? I'd rather not have to buy one as there is nothing wrong with this one, it's just I'd like something a little quicker. I should add that this laptop pretty much gets used for just Internet, MS Office, a little basic Photoshopping and that's about it.

Any advice/help/knowledge is much appreciated.

The best CPU you can upgrade to as far as I can tell is the M 780 which is 2.27GHz. The trouble you have is that I doubt the chipset of your laptop could take a dual core CPU and running Windows 7 on 1 core isn't going to be that great an experience. I would just save your cash and buy something more modern.

As I believe it the dual core would not work. So as I suspected...time to save me pennies and look towards something newer. Thanks for you help.
