Starting to feel it's time to upgrade my CPU. I'm running a Phenom II 965 Black at the min.
I don't really want to change my mobo at the present time, so was wondering what the gains would be like from swapping in an X6 1090 or 1100?

Any experience of this or advice greatly appreciated.

Are you overclocked?

The hex core will give some performance increase, but maybe not in games or just a few fps.

No haven't OC'd at all. Never have so was a bit unsure of how to go about it, though from what I gather the mobo tool make it fairly easy. But this was why I planned to just stick a faster stock CPU in.

What GPU do you have?

I note that you're on 4Gb Ram. Is it CPU or Memory which is slowing you?

Are you using a HDD or SSD? Startup will be due to HDD rather than CPU (maybe made worse if it's an old OS install which has become slowed by bloatware etc)

OS install ain't that old. And have used a few good tools to clean up. I previously bought an SSD through Overclockers (crucial V4 if I remember rightly) and it was terrible, so I went back to a spinner. Maybe time to look at this again.
Last time I got RAM it was dirt cheap, but seems pretty pricey now at the min, would I be right?

Oc'ing is easy, you could probably stick 300-400mhz extra on the 965 on stock voltage easily. Had one myself and they're great for it!

I upgraded to the 8320 and noticed a performance increase but to be fair if you want to avoid spending loads of money and trying to find a buyer for your 965 (luckily i already had one set up) just throw a small OC on it and see how it performs :)
