CPU upgrade

If he wants incremental upgrade's then i would tell him to save up a bit more until he can afford the Ram/Cpu and motherboard at the same time unless he is ok buying a part and leaving it on the shelf until the next. Other than that perhaps just a GPU or SSD?

He's okay doing the leaving it on the shelf thing. He already has a 280x which does fine for what he's playing. SSD I have mentioned a few times also.

He's got his heart set on a CPU at the moment :o

I'd tell him to go with the I5-6400 in that case then :)

Great CPU for gaming and it is a reasonable price.

Probably the best thing for him to do is try and find something like a used i5-2500K bundle. Shouldn't be much more than £100 with a bit of perseverance.

If buying new have a look at the Tom's guide to CPUs http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/best-cpus,3986.html

The AMD X4 860K, FX8-8300, and Intel i3-6100 are £66, £103, and £110, respectively. All will be substantially faster than a Q6600. All need quite different motherboards though so plan ahead.

I did originally think of the 2500k, I may still go down that path, But I thought if he needed a new motherboard & ram it would be better going with something newer & then later down the line he could upgrade it again without too much hassle.

Kinda how we did his last build which was a E6400 & 2gb ram to Q6600 & 8gb ram.

Out of them all I think he will lean towards Intel.

Thanks for the help so far.

That 6600 socket is dead in the water. A used sandybridge chip setup will be night and day different to him and will let the 280x fly.

I went from a q9550 chip to the i7 3930k and it is like going from a ford fiesta to a ferrari lol
