i have cpu-z running and the multiplier keeps changing from 9 to 6 and back again. when it changes to 6 the core voltage drops down. temps are ok. i have just updated the bios.

is this some sort of throtling? or efficiency?

the cpu is a Q6600 and the mobo is the gigabyte x38.

Welcome to Speedstep, it's nothing to worry about, just a power saving feature.

Jokester

honestly, this isn't a new feature. how do people still not know about this?!?
Also, don't people read the manual that comes with their new goodies?

I mean, you plop down £180 odd-quid on a new marvel of technology, at least you could read the manual!

<edit>Sorry, it isn't meantioned in the processor manual. it IS however, mentioned in my (so presumably your) motherboard manual.

there isnt a bit in my manual that says "the multiplier wobbles around at will". gimmie a break i've only had the board a week. last time i upgraded was to the P4C800, and i dont remember that feature then.

in the Mobo manual it will tell you that there are two functions (that can be disabled) which reduce clockspeed and power consumption.
