I've just grabbed myself a Noctua NH-D14 problem being I have found is that the primary cpu connector on my motherboard is PWM only where those stock fans are voltage control only.

I have connected it to the cpu opt connector as that is voltage controlled for the minute, is there any reason not to do that or should the ports give pretty much the same output? I have noticed the fans do seem really eager to spin up when there is a small surge in heat.

What motherboard do you have? On my Asus X99-Pro, I'm able to control whether a 4 pin header is PWM controlled, or voltage controlled - May be worth checking the BIOS to see if yours is the same.

Gigabyte z170mx gaming 5 matx

That was the first thing i checked, the bios only gives options for pwm speed per degree and silent etc profiles.
