This maybe a silly question because i am a bit behind the times when it come to overcloking (last clock was a 2500 Barton lol) but why is it that in CPUID the multiplyer on my e6300 keeps changing between 6-7? 1 second its 6 the other its 7 etc... its annoying me because the clock speed keeps dropping from 2240 down to 1920. Is this some sort of throttling to lower power consuption or am i going nuts?

w00t im a n00b :D just ran prime95 and the multi was fixed at 7 so it is just throttling down when idle. See i figured it out all by myself. :p

Not to worry mate, the same thing happened to me when I installed CPU-Z last night and noticed my Q6600 kept changing from 2.4ghz (9 multi) to 1.6ghz (6 multi). Took me a little while to figure out what was going on too ;)

It is intell's speedstep technology, and yes, it is a throttle for when the cpu is idle, it can, however, be disabled in the bios if you wish, the setting is called EIST or C1E

sweet, now for another question. What can i expect from my e6300 on a DS4 with stock cooler? I have XMS2 6400 memory (6404). With the FSB at 320 i am stable and running at 55c full load.

2.8 shouldn't be difficult, that would be an fsb of 400, and would also be running your ram at stock speed, although, if it's the stock cooler, keep an eye on your temps, so far, they are perfectly fine.

Invest in a Arctic Freezer Pro, I've got 3.6 now on my e6320 and its fully on a DS3. It idles around the 38 and loads at around 56 / 57. You'll need the Ram to support it though.

Is that the best cooler for this type of chip/overclock? It seems a bit to cheap to be good! But of course i am not going to argue if it is ;)
