Quick Google suggests several things posted towards the end of last year with regards to a possible shortage.

Now I take everything I read like that with a pinch of salt, but after listening to Hot Bottom Feeder by Clutch, I've been inspired to cook crab cakes.

However I cannot seem to get hold of crab in my local supermarkets. The only stuff I found was in a tin and was really expensive.

Also then thought I could cheap out a bit, and mix crab paste in with generic white fish, but no crab paste either!!!

cheap crab ? not in the UK, and not in tins either, which is not very tasty either.
in the usa, was it? with over-fishing taking out the fish, there is a surplus of krill, for them to feed on, so they are cheaper there, for us too post-brexit?
(edit: because of usa imports OR the uk fishermen overfishing !)

If you live close enough to the sea how much is a crab then ?

1 crab might give 200g of meat - Joliver recipe says 750g meat=10cakes ... 3 each ? so ~1 crab per person ! = $$$

[the kingcrab link doesn't resolve for me ]

Morrisons quite often have pots if crab meat which is reasonably good quality.

Alternatively find your nearest fishmonger and ask them to get you some in.

Either way I doubt it'll be a cheap dinner :D

Final option, learn to scuba dive, always saw plenty of crab whilst diving in UK waters
