Cracked PGR3 disc...

I just got round to trying to play my 360 properly tonight, and found that it wouldn't read my PGR3 disc straight away. I took it out to inspect it, and I found that it's got about a 20mm crack from the inner hole directly towards the outside of the disc.

Upon a quick re-insert of the disc, it worked again fine, but didn't dare try playing the game, as I'm paranoid that playing with a cracked disc, and those silly speeds PGR3 runs the discs at, that it might shatter itself in the drive while playing, taking my 360 with it.

Am I right to be paranoid about it and keep it out of my 360? My PGR3 is a second hand copy, so I can't really return it, is it possible to get it swapped via MS at all? Or should I just get myself a cheap second hand one off auction?

Cheers,

Dave

Try getting in contact with the distributor, i seem to remember there was an issue with some PGR3 disks cracking and it may be possible to get a replacement.

i have had the same (in this case with ridge racer 6)

it started off with a small crack as you have described. over time with play and the centrifugal force of the disk spinning in the dvd drive, the crack spread into the data area of the disk. i also read that once the crack gets to a certain size the disk may shatter in your 360 killing its dvd drive!

i know that i could just be accused of handling my disks roughly, and not removing them properly from the “gripper” in the dvd case (e.g. press down on middle, not yank at the edges of the disk, etc), but i am a (semi ;)) responsible adult who treats my disks with care. with media damage it is a case of guilty until proven innocent

i blame the combination of cheap media used and the gripper in the dvd cases. since my incident i never store my disks in the gripper area of the box, but use a thin felted plastic case which i keep in the box.

i managed to get my disk replaced by buying a new copy then taking the old one back the day after and saying that it was the one i bought yesterday and it was like that when i opened the case. a little underhand i know, but ill be damned if i gonna lose £40 through no fault of my own

When i snapped my BF2 disc for pc i contacted EA and they said they would replace the disc if i sent it to them for 10quid but i just bought a cheap second hand copy from the bay.

Yeah, the exact same thing happened to me with RR6 too. No one believes you when you say you never moved the console, never roughly treated the disc or whatever

My 360 has never moved since the day I bought it in January. I must have had literally thousands of CDs, coverdiscs, DVDs etc over the years and not one of them ever got cracked like this Ridge Racer disc.

i've had the same sort of problem with DVD's in the past, usually down to a combination of dodgy dvd replication plants, overly tight cases (there are a couple such as the double scanavo which are notorious for this), and general wear and tear.

MS or the publisher will probably replace the disk for a nomrinal fee (if the disk is still in print - which in this case it is).

One tip for anyone who has a collection of games or DVD's, keep some decent quality cases as spare and swap them for any nasty cases (my favourite is the M-lock case, followed closely by the Amaray, with Scanavo and similar ones being the worst).
