Cracks in plaster in landing

I have recently noticed cracks in plaster along the skirting board on the landing. There was one to the left of a socket but it is now on the right to and can see a hair line crack down the stairs too.
Spoke quickly to a builder this morning and he will look tomorrow fingers crossed. But he said I probably need a structural engineer. If this is the case do I need to go through my insurance or would mentioning it to insurance when I don't know the issue cause me problems in the future thanks in advance for any help in this issue

Is it new plaster? If you tap it with you hand, does it sound solid or is there a hollow noise?

Plaster does crack. I guess you'd need to see if its cracked because its old (or new) and then decide from there. If its cracked because the house has shifted and the crack is actually in the wall itself then thats a different matter and could be expensive. If you can be sure that its just the plaster cracking then I wouldnt worry too much unless its falling off the wall or you can feel a bubble underneath.

How wide is the crack? Anything showing on the outside of the house at the same point? If not, generally nothing to worry about.

The crack is between the plaster and skirting boards up to 1cm but still flat /flush to the wall i.e it's not a gape. It is on a adjoining wall to nextdoor to the side and the bath and bathroom behind it,I can not see if it goes into here cos I can't get the side off the bath myself.
The wall down the stairs looks like textured plastering so probably been fix in the past oh dear.
Will try get a picture up but it asks for a URL for the photo. Feeling a little better about the issue while considering your replies so thankyou.

You could post a link to the picture or tweet without embedding it - most of us on this forum are smart enough to follow hyperlinks ;)

Depends where its coming from
There's 2 ways to do it just to make it more
Confusing lol
Paste it directly into your post
Or use the insert image icon ~to the right of the emoticon icon.

google suggests skirting boards absorb moisture and can shrink.

possibly it's just slightly shrunk since being installed and dragged the paint/plasterboard with it until it cracked?

whilst googling for you I came across this which looks like a fairly similar "crack"

I doubt its anything to worry about

His looks a fraction too high to be a skirting board crack
That double socket may be the cause
Doesn't look original?
They may have caused the crack while fixing that to the wall?

I honestly don’t know many structural engineers who would think that worth their time. It’s very minor looking in the grand scheme of things

Looks almost as if the plaster has flaked at the surface. You could try removing some of it and seeing if the crack continues behind the surface.
