I'm looking to buy a few bottles of beer for my cousin who is a big lover of all sorts of Beer but as I don't drink the stuff myself, I have no idea where to start.

I've seen a few people on here buying from Brew Dog and their website has loads to choose from but I have no way of knowing what the best choices are. I appreciate a lot is down to personal taste but are there any regular Brew Dog customers on here who could make a few recommendations?

Cheers :)

Punk IPA has always been my favourite. You can buy large bottles from Tesco now.

Had some brew dog punk IPA last night.

Pretty nasty to be honest. There are much nicer beers/ales available.

What type of beer does he tend to drink? Are you buying for a present or just some casual drinking? If it's a present then one of the really high abv beers from Brewdog would make a nice present. Tactical Nuclear Penguin is the best I think, but Sink The Bismark is alright. Both are very unusual and would make good gifts.
If you just want some normal stuff from Brewdog, then the IPA Is Dead range would suit. Don't get it in shops very often so he's unlikely to have had it. Here's a link: http://www.brewdog.com/product/ipa-is-dead-2014

If looking for just something for drinking, but a bit more special, then seek out anything by Stone Brewing, or Kernel. Your specialist alcohol shop should carry something from one or both of them.

Finally, if buying from the supermarket then it's hard to go with with William Brothers stuff and Brewdog. Get a few Sierra Nevada Torpedos in there as well, found in Tesco, and you've got a good mixed bag.

What a worthless post, how about you post some beers which you think are good then?

I recommend you see if you can buy any Beartown Brewery stuff.

But largely to support my local economy. ;)

(Although they are supposed to be very good.)

My friend designed some bottle labels for them- in the 'news' section of the Beartown site, the single hop bottled ales. Now discontinued unfortunately.
She did them for a uni project, and having met the head brewer, I persuaded her to send them to the brewery, and they loved them!

Congleton's finest, for sure.:D

found a great shop in jesmond up here that stocks hundreds of beers!

anyway I have been enjoying beers by The Kernel Brewery
http://www.thekernelbrewery.com/

they do multiple beers such as Pale ales but each one uses different hops..single of multiple varieties to give different flavours

Really?

Go step outside and have a word with yourself young man :p

Have to admit Brewdog would be my suggestion as well :D - OP says he's buying for his cousin who's a big beer fan so I'm guessing he's probably tried their core range. Having a look at their abstract and limited releases and without a budget to work from I'd be looking at something like these:

  • Watt Dickie it's only a 60ml bottle but the ABV is 35% ( ) and it's cheap enough at only £3.50
  • Mix Tape 8 while moving up slightly in price (£12.00) and content (14.5%) is one I'd thoroughly recommend and have done a small write up on it under the BOTW weekly results total thread. (clicky) ;)
  • Shipwrecker Circus is another I've tried. Moving down in price this time (£5.99) and content (10.5%) it isn't one I personally liked but everyone's different and your cousin may love it. :D

Go local is always my advice with beer these days, where ever you are in thoe country there will be a number of small local brewers each of whom will produce some excellent beers. Gives you something to look forward to when your touring this green and pleasent land.

I'm also not a big fan of the 'craft beer' label it's a bit of meaningless bumf that some people seem to think is an excuse for making bad beers purely because they are 'interesting' or 'different' quality over marektting please!

Rehills by any chance? You've also got one is Gosforth called Coppers as well.

it was rehills

lad at work also said try coppers...rehills also has a really good whisky selection which is handy

theres also another in the green market now supposed to have a good range

If you live near Didsbury then a new shop just opened last week on Burton road that sells lots of nice craft ales. Its a bit like beermoth but not in the Northen Quarter, Also Carringtons (think it's a small chain) have a some nice ones including normally some local brews.

If you are in the centre of town you can always go to the Brew dog bar, and have some tasters ;)

You've also got one in The Grainer Market named Glug.

OP, it would probably be an idea to let us know what he drinks already for us to give an real advice.

I love brewdog, I can't name a bad beer they make, Punk IPA is probably the most universally liked. I tried Jack Hammer recently and liked that more.

There's a few hipster real ale drinkers out there that since brewdog has become "Mainstream" they've thrown a hissy fit but I think it's fantastic - if you ever get a chance to tour the brewery then I advise you do.

Best thing you can do when it comes to buying craft beer for someone else is just pick some interesting looking bottles - it's so much based on personal preference that you might as well go "well, hedge my bets that they'll drink at least a few of these and the rest will be trying something new"
