I was swimming yesterday and after a while I got cramp in one of my feet. I couldnt carry on swimming and had to stop because it kept happening. What makes cramp happen?

I have been eating healthily -fruit, veg, rice, chicken, salt, pepper and salad. The only thing I havent been eating/drinking that much of is red meat and milk

oh -and if I went to the doctors they would laugh in my face then kick me out the door!

Lactic Acid.

[edit]To go a bit further, lack of oxygen to the area of muscle, and often lack of salt/water. Ironic that you were swimming, eh? :p

i think it can be linked to a lack of salt in ones diet

even 6 months ago i used to always get them when running, but they now seemed to have stopped :D *touches wood*

Yeah think when we sweat we sweat out sodium (salt) and should replenish that after exercise, sensibly.

Also found in milk I believe.
What a random statement. Yes it is, because lactose intolerance is the inability to digest dairy produce on a normal level.

I am the font of random tit bits of knowledge.

I have plently of salt in my diet. I add salt to food like tomatoes everyday. Havent drank milk for maybe 3 weeks though. (got used to cereal with water)

Don't think dietry questions constitute medical advice (dietricians etc) but what is the benefit in replacing milk with water. Some people make porridge with water others just milk, others 50/50.

I meant it was random because it didn't really have anything to do with the topic and everyone knows that anyway :p

Cereal with water?? BLEH!

And lactic acid build up is what causes cramp, not lack of it :)

 Never tried it...sounds...yucky....

I did it about a year ago and got used to it then went back to milk. Its horrid at first but after a few days you get used to it. When I went back to milk after getting used to water it tasted like eating my oats with double cream (sick smilie)

presumably because milk is fatty, you have less fat, so get less fat!

You need some fat in your diet.
