Had somebody scan my ECU for faults, and the Crankshaft Speed Sensor came up as an intermittant fault. So I was just wondering, what symptoms will be shown if the above part were to be intermittantly faulty?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hmm, your the second person who's told me that.

Any ideas whether it can cause either engine knocking whilst accelerating, misfires or engine stalls?

stalls and misfiring deffinatly if it is intermitant. If the ECU has no crank angle reading it has no idea what to do with the fuel and ignition, so will cut out.

Ah, that's all I wanted to find out, as I'm experiencing those issues at the moment.

Although, am I right in saying that a misfire, is when you're accelerating, but the engine kind of judders and you can't accelerate away smoothly?

It’s possible that an intermittent problem with a CPS could cause these problems, the ECU uses the information from the CPS to time the ignition and fuel injectors. Because the CPS is subjected to a lot of heat and vibration the connector end can often come loose from the sensor end causing intermittent problems like this.

Considering the cost and ease of a replacement I’d just change the CPS and see if it helps.

I might be thinking of someone else, but do you happen to own a 1.6 VW Golf?

Yep that's me. :)

Cheers for the above by the way, I'm just gonna get a replacement, hopefully everything will be sorted.

If it's the same VW Golf that was having trouble restarting after stalling then that could also be caused by a dodgy CPS.

I just replaced one of these on my dads S40 last week. He didnt really have any symptoms at all that it was giving up, except really bad fuel economy since he's had the car(he suspected the MAF was playing up). When it finally gave up last week he came here with the car and we watched it reving from tickover up to 3Krpm on its own and the engine check light had finally come on. My laptop diagnosed the CSS and once replaced all was good and the fuel economy is much bettter than at any time since hes had the car. It only took 10 minutes to change it and cost £39 from Volvo.

Yep, hopefully it'll sort out the stall and restart issues, however I haven't stalled the car in a long time. :p

Gonna get a new CSS and I'll report back on my success.

LOL :D

I had the same problem with my 1.6 Bora. It'd already had similar running problems earlier in it's life and the temperature coolant sensor then the MAF were replaced under warranty. Crank sensor @ 60k was the last straw, especially when the local VW dealer proudly showed me the diags and wanted me to OK £780 worth of work without checking it properly!

VW engine sensors (and the 97-99 diff rivets made of chocolate) - useless, Rest of the car - excellent.
