Crap Car Dealers - Why so crap?

As some of you know I'm considering selling the Boxster and getting something a bit more suitable to my needs so in the last week I've been to a couple of car dealers to test drive a couple of cars.

Dealer 1 (large general dealership selling most types of cars)

Audi TT 225 in my favourite combination of Avus Silver with red leather. Described as "PROBABLY THE UKs BEST PRESENTED CARS". Despite the fact that it was about £2k over priced I was prepared to pay the extra for something so special so I went along to view it.
Pulled up outside garage and saw the TT. Even from a distance I could tell that it wasn't all that well presented. Got up close and immediately realised that it had been owned by a woman driver/gay hairdresser. Yes I know that sounds stereotypical but the gearstick was scratched so badly from rings, every panel had dents on it, both bumpers were badly scuffed (in several places each) and the leather interior was really shabby (impressive wear for a 40k miles car)
Didn't even bother to test drive, just walked away having wasted my time.

Dealer 2 - Renault dealership

Phoned up and arranged to test drive a Clio 197. Were very helpful on the phone as the car wasn't in the showroom however they told me that if I gave it a few hours they'd get it on site.
I arrive 2 hours later and see a scruffy, dirty Clio. It's apparently being used by one of the salesmen therefore it's a mess. Not a good start.
Out of the corner of my eye I spot a 197 F1. Salesman tells me that it's 2 yr old, £13k with only 17k on the clock so I arrange a test drive. Was given the keys to a stone cold car and told to thrash it within an inch of its life, salesman tells me he doesn't care how I drive it. Despite being told to do what I want I warm the car up anyway and give it a decent test drive.
I quite liked the F1, seats are very good, driving position is good (if a little high), steering feels precise, handles very well yet is still comfortable. My only criticisms are the noise and the cheap feel to everything. I poke the door cards and they creak, the parcel shelf is squeaky, the drivers seat has quite a hole worn into it and generally it feels not dissimilar to my old R5GTT or Clio 16V.
Overall it's a decent car though although this particular example is a bit shabby for such low mileage so I move onto dealer 3.

Dealer 3 - Sports car specialist

Arrive at dealer 3. They appear to have lots of nice cars on the forecourt and I spot the Audi TT that I was going to view.
From a distance it looks decent enough and it's priced more reasonably (£10k instead of £12k like the other one). Up close however it's obvious that the dealer has tarted it up to sell quickly. El cheapo Linglong type tyres look like they've just been fitted and there's loads of badly touched up paintwork where stone chips have been painted over.
The salesman gives me the spiel about TTs (mostly incorrect) before I politely tell him that my last car was a TT and then he shuts up. He starts the car and we go for a test drive (with him as a passenger). Car feels on its last legs, 2nd gear is knackered and it won't rev cleanly above above 4000rpm (coil pack/maf perhaps?). It feels loose and sloppy, like an old car (even though it's a 53 plate)
I get back to the showroom and we talk figures. I give him all the details of my car and he umms and ahhs about how Boxsters are crap and nobody wants to buy them before looking in Glass's guide and tells me that he'd be able to give me £15k for mine. Even then it's doing me a favour as my car is crap, the book guide apparently says that all Boxsters come with 19" alloys as standard, PASM and PCM so none of my options are actually options and therefore I'm lucky to be offered anything that figure. He'd only be retailing my car for £16k apparently. Yeah, right....
After being thoroughly insulted I give a fake mobile number and simply walk out. I don't want to deal with a bunch of clowns like this and hope that the recession hits them hard. Idiots.
I understand that dealers have to make a profit but by belittling and insulting their potential customers? Surely that's no way to run a business?

So, all in all a bit of a wasted time really. The Renault garage was the best of the lot (main dealer so it's to be expected) however the standard of their cars wasn't good enough for the price they were charging.

Still unsure what to do though. The more I think about it the more I think I might just keep the Porsche. The sun is shining outside so I think I'll go get the top down and listen to that glorious engine and exhaust as I blast down the ringroad. (or maybe I'll go test drive an Exige as I do quite miss my 111R...)

Ive found dealers totally not interested lately.

You walk in looking to buy, and im amazed how much they dont seem to want the cash

They are clearly just trying to pray on gulible people :(

I was lucky when i went to view my car, really friendly and helpful. The test drive was really good as well, he let me drive it with 'haste' but not until it had warmed up - which i liked.

I did go to a VW garage and they were complete morons so I walked away.

Your experience with dealer 3 was similar to what I got at a honda dealer when I went to look at Type R's a couple of months ago, ahh nobody wants Chryslers I doubt I can give you anything for it.

Nobody wants them? I've had 3 people walk up to me in the street since I've owned it and offered to buy it off me there and then since I've owned it, one on the first day I bought it, for 2k more than I paid for it.

Car dealers are scum, its the be all and end all of it.

See, no offense to car dealers, but i reckon with a little more people skillz... they could do so much more business...

I remember when I was looking to buy my last car. I'd seen a TDCi Mondeo on autotrader from a garage near Chester. It looked mint, very thorough description, nice, high resolution photos - exactly what I wanted.

On arrival, the car was filthy. One wingmirror had been smashed off, and there was a LOT of condensation inside the car. Opening it up, the back seats were covered in a carpet of mould. It really was horrific. The dealer couldn't see what the problem was, and offered some towels to sit on during a test drive. The car was started to a cloud of blue smoke from the exhaust, and a very loud rattling from the engine. It was a complete nail. To boot, the car had done 50K more miles than advertised, was a 115bhp as opposed to the 130bhp advertised, and also had a 5-speed box when the ad said it was a 6. The blue smoke was, apparently, not a fault, but because it was a diesel and 'they all do that when cold'! Oh, and one private owner turned out to be the Royal Bank of Scotland company car scheme.

I wasn't interested, so in a last ditch attempt, they threw the keys to a very high mileage 320d BMW at me and insisted I went for a test drive. The car hadn't been prepped and was pretty grim inside. If I remember correctly, it had done 120K miles in 2.5years and felt like it had done every single one.

What a bunch of cowboys.

I agree, when we were getting my mum's car all the salesman was going on about was how many cars they were selling and just crap we weren't interested in, when we asked not very searching questions we were just given vague/sketchy answers, then when the car finally came in we asked when we could pick it up "ooh I'll try and get it registered and taxed tomorrow" what do you mean 'try'? It's your sodding job, do it!

I imagine it can be quite cut-throat and lots of back stabbing but I've got no time for them due to a lot of outright lying a lot of the time simply to grab a sale.

They are clearly just trying to pray on gulible people :(

I think the 3rd dealer thought I needed to downgrade for financial reasons and hence was offering me a crap deal.

Once I explained that the car was paid for outright and that I simply wanted something a little bit more practical he said he might have a friend of a friend that could possibly offer me a little bit more.

By that point I was just thinking of a fake mobile number to give him... :D

I tend to find that only about 1 in 10 are nice enough to really deal with... makes buying a car quite tough

Indeed. When you find that 1 in 10 though, and you get to speak to someone who is genuinely knowledgeable about their stock, can answer any of your questions without having to go and check, it's most refreshing!

Looking forward to some test drives in the coming weeks.

Will be reporting back from Honda, possibly renault, maybe Ford, and jsut whoever else I can be bothered with.

When i buy cars now i just use this method.. Assume EVERYTHING you are told is a lie until you look yourself, get it checked or see the paperwork.

In my experiance of buying my own cars and going with family, all car dealers are lying vermin who couldnt tell the truth if it would save their life. Ive heard fake accents, bullpoo stories about the history which magically changes when i get the gf to go on her own and ask about the same car ( always catches them out ) and flat out bullcrap spouted from apparently brilliant VW main dealers about my sisters car.

She bought a nice tidy polo for 6k and it turns out literally everything shes been told is a bloody lie. They had apparently given it a full service and changed ALL the fluids and swapped the discs, pads and shoes. She took it to friend who is a mechanic and according to him ( and he has no reason to lie ) almost none of its been done. It had done 45k and he reckons the front wheels have never been off the bloody thing! took him ages to pry them off :p

Shes in the process of making formal complains about the utter lies and bullcrap from that dealer to VW uk... luckily the car is actually a nice car just needed some consumables and a good going over.

Im from sales type background (account management), so whenever they try and feed me crap, I tell em that and most times it shuts em up.

I find vag dealers are pretty good though.

I have never, ever had a pleasurable experience at a car dealer when looking to buy with the exception of when I bought my Mums car. As soon as the salesman realised I knew about the cars, he simply answered any questions I had truthfully and honestly.

Every other salesman, ever, has bigged up shabby junk, lied, made up all sorts of crap or just generally not had a clue. My favourite is the guy at a local place who told me I had to buy his 530i Auto as it was a 3 Litre M5, and Manual ones dont exist as the engine develops too much torque.

Before I bought my evo I went to see another Eisen Grey one in south west london. Described at mint all round.

Turned up and jinxed the visit by saying to my two friends that the worst thing that could happen would be that all the AYC lights would be on - which they were (indicating a fault with the AYC system, could be a fluid change required or a pump replacement, or worst case scenario a new AYC diff - £3000 from mitsu)

Despite the owner of the car lot being a "Rally Driver", the car condition was shocking and they clearly had no idea about the car or how it should be looked after. The car had mould growing on it, the battery was dead (probably acceptable). It had barely any fuel in it, and when I was taken out in it, we stopped at the petrol station and put about a tenner of 95RON in it - big nono.

The car was then driven by a total tool - the "innit bruv" type who proceeded to launch it and drive it like a hooligan around a nearby housing estate. I actually had to tell him to ease off of it.

I then had a go in it, and it actually drove reasonably well despite its poor care.

However, being a "fresh import", it still had snow tyres on, which made it very skittish.

Paint work was dented and it had rusting rear arches. Also said it had been in the country for 3 months when the import paperwork said it had been imported nearer a year previous.

It wasn't registered or SVA'd, and needed a lot of work to get straight. He said he'd do all the work but as a result wouldn't move on the asking price as he "would be losing money on it anyway". Yeah right.

We left and didn't go back.
