My volvo got nailed from behind (oo err) by a honda civic today!

Where he was hit, no damage at all, i got out of the passenger side because of the traffic, exchanged details etc.

The honda's front end was caved in! Bonnet/lights/bumper all knackered! The guy says he does not want to go through insurance, i said that that would be ok. Got back in through passenger door, and drove off.

HOWEVER - When i attempted to get out of the drivers door when i got home, the door would not open past 2 inches! So i pushed it, and it caught and has bent in the edge of the wing, so it would seem there was more damage than i first thought. Problem is, if i go through insurance, it will be a write off (insured value 500), which is a shame, cause i love the little car.

Its also gunna look a little dodgy if suddenly go through insurance? I will be honest and say i had been having problems with the door dropping, but it always closed with little problems. Now it catches the wing at the front and smacks into the catch, it wont close unless i lift the door as i close it :(

What would you do in my situation? My neck/shoulders/lower back are quite sore, but my mobility is not affected badly atm, just a little stiff. I dont think i would be claiming for injuries if i stay as i am now. My mum says its only going to get worse, and i should dread tommorrow morning!

It will hurt for the next few days but it can be bearable if its not "all" that bad :)

If you can just try and hammer out the panels so the door opens freely :)

 That sucks dude.

There was a pretty big smash on the way home from work yesterday (usually long queues... people getting angry/frustrated etc.

A white Clio was involved, its rear bumper was completely ripped off  A Punto had the whole drivers side of the car caved in. A white van was parked up, but I didn't see any damage. And then about 100 yds down the road, there was a motorbike smashed up lying down, and a car parked up (been there for a while) with a dented front end.

I'm just waiting for some numpty to run into the back of me. What's the point in me spending the time and money to return my car to its original condition, if all it takes is one idiot to ruin my plans.

I hope you took his number plate down too. His details might be false.

edit... When some idiot rear ended me in the 214, the first thing I did was check that the boot opened correctly. Of course, you don't think to check the doors. It must have been quite a smash though. How hard did he hit you?

You lost me a bit there. If the guy didnt want to go through insurance then that would mean he was going to pay for the damage to your car himself??
Or have i missed something?

Surely if he doesn't want to go through insurance then you should ask him to pay for the damage to your door. Find out how much it'll cost to fix the door, get a written quote and then phone him up and ask him to pay

I can understand if a young driver doesn't want to go through insurance as it can really hurt your renewal quote (loss of NCB etc)

Go through your insurance, even if your car is a write off its doesnt matter as im sure ive heard someone on here say that if you are the innocent party you can demand to have the car returned to its original condition. Am i wrong?

Also, youve the whiplash and lets face it, if his insurance goes up perhaps the little scrot will be a little more careful in future!

I got smashed into by a van in December last year and regret not going to the doctors and then claiming whiplash.

Go to the doctors mate.

When I was rear ended last year I got checked out as i didn't want to have problems at a later date and then regret not doing anything.

Also my car was written off.

I am now insured with Barclays who did not penalise me for the rear shunt (which was 100% not my fault) :D

If you are truthfully aching then you will probably find it will get worse in the next few days. Sounds like you actually do genuinely have whiplash, as rare as that is nowadays. :)

I didn't feel too bad this morning, not great, but I'm not claiming injuries just not bad enough for it :)

I'm still undecided what I'm going to do, I mean, he hit me pretty hard and there might be underlying damage.

I will get my mate to give it a once over and then see where we stand :)

call the guy and say youve found a prob with yours. cars never get away without damage.

ask for his insurance details and claim from his

I know you're attached to that car but if the front door has taken damage from a hit up the rear the impact muct have been transmitted through the whole car.

I'd let the insurance company write it off, there's a good chance that the car is much more heavily damaged then you first thought. If you agree to settle with the guy and then discover further problems later you have to sort them you're self. If the chassis is bent then there won't be much you can do about it.

Take him to the cleaners. May teach him to pay attention next time :rolleyes

You can always buy the car back can't you?
