Crash

fairly true! you're at the end of the day on two wheels, skinny tyres etc! depends how much and where you ride :)

BMX? no one even cares when you crash, its expected.
Road racing? happens often, you're going past your limits past your comfort zone and mistakes happen
MTB - same as BMX.
commuting? - traffic, pedestrians, different road conditions etc... increase the chances of crashing no matter how you ride, fast or slow..

It's a bit dramatic, but I guess there's some truth to it. I've been leisure riding for three years and in that time I've gone over the bars once when I misjudged a corner, I've keeled over once when I brushed the kerb at like 6mph, and I almost pooped myself when u slid in a grid and rode up the grass verge. That's three incidents in over 10,000 miles and only one was remotely serious.

On the other hand, in a similar amount of miles I've had a couple of OTBs, been knocked off by a motorbike, slipped on ice and broken my wrist, and had three or four smaller offs. Oh, and one instance of a pothole so deep that I ended up with the headset saying hello to my nuts :/

Maybe I'm just a clumsy rider!

Oh yeah, I had a great time sliding on some ice at the bottom of a descent from a cat 3. That was definitely pants-poop o clock. Managing to keep it upright, but plenty of swear words fell out of my mouth.

I had an off involving a bus running me off the road within a week or two of starting cycling (around 4 years ago). I've also been taken out/gone over the boot of a car when it pulled out of a parking spot in Rusholme and u-turned without any kind of indication or checking. Cycling in Rusholme is pretty much asking to have stuff like this happen though. Aside from that I've had a few minor offs in ice and rain. No major injuries so far though *touch wood*.

I don't think there is much arguing that you will crash, that is a given. I've had a couple of offs over the years both on and off road. Most dramatic being head on into a Mondeo but I was young and just bounced! My most serious injury was shattered pride as I tucked into a corner in front of two other cyclists and slid on fruit that had dropped from an overhanging tree and been squashed into the road!

slid of my hybrid a few times thanks to the stupid centre of gravity being so high, as soon as the back wheel slides the bike wants to topple.

Not fell of my CX yet, only time I have came close if when the rear wheel gets stuck stuck in a groove and the rear end of the bike refuses to go anywhere but straight on whilst the bars are facing a different direction

Ive been riding all sorts if 2 wheeled machines for the best part of almost 2 decades, MTB mostly, even these days i'm still having offs of some description every other ride, the difference is longer you've been doing it the better you are at going with the crash to mitigate potential injuries, but even then some crashes happen so fast and unexpectedly you just cant prepare for that, and injuries are bound to happen.
over the last couple of years i've had a few really bad ones, that have required long recovery times, mostly ligament damage. but thats the beauty of the human body it heals, albeit slower as you get older...
Crashes are an inevitable part of riding, that's not to say it will happen often but you can be almost guaranteed that it'll happen at some point, no use in fearing it, how often all depends on the situations you put yourself in.

I've played the "mud or blood" game in the shower, more times I can care to count.
Got some metal work done, knocked out cold ... the list goes on.

Would do it all over again :D and think the article is a bit melodramatic.
