Crashing 6970

Hey all,

just thought I'd pick your collective brains. I have the below PC and just had my 6970 arrive but it keeps crashing. Runs fine on the desktop with the usual iexplorer, word, adobe reader etc. I can load games like armagetron and half life 1 and have them run with the occasional crsah. However when I go to run something like uniengine, furmark or 3dmark2011 its just goes instant black screen, gpu fan at 100% and system completely unresponsive. I had uninstalled all my drivers etc beforehand and tried different versions. 10.11 that came on the disc, 10.12 from the site and the 10.12a hotfix but still no joy. My next thought was maybe my power supply, i messed around with load balancing in different ways as not having a spare around but I figured because its managed a gtx470 and also xfire 5770 its probably not the cause. Anyone else have any solutions over then RMA.

Intel i7 920@stock to eliminate this as the problem
Asus p6t se
6x2GB corsair ddr3 ram
ocz z series 650 watt psu
western digital caviar black
couple of optical drives
3 x 120mm fans

Many Thanks in advance.

Sorry mate but no ideas - I'm having issues with my new 6970 too - running too hot and performance isn't what it should be. I have managed to run 3dmark11 and the score came in right but in games it's not running well enough imo.

Prolly gonna RMA.

Good luck o/

How hot is too hot? during idle or under load? Have you checked temps dave? Pretty obvious I know, but half the time the bloody obvious is the problem.

I had an issue earlier where the card stayed at 500mhz core clock in bc2 and then bc2 nam, reverted to 880 in black ops though.

I've had the same problem when card sits at 500/1345, I just turned chrome browser down and then when gaming all frequencies came back to normal. It's a bit annoying thing, hopefully they will fix it with new drivers.
With oc'ing it's a bit trickier, I can't run mine at 950/1475 cause games is crashing after playing for 30min sometimes takes a bit longer. So I try to keep around 920/1475. But even then games crashes from time to time. Although I don't use +20%, maybe that's my problem. But mine passes heaven or 3dmark without any issues even on the highest of. Had no issues with the heat it idles at around 38 top ~81@34 fan, but when I know that i'll go for longer gaming for example bc2 I crank fan to around 44%, yeah you can hear it afterwards, but game sounds are louder. I kinda think that drivers stops working when card reaches more that 81°c. But even keeping temps lower than 80°c makes games crash from time to time. I want to believe that it's drivers problem, cause sometimes it really anoyes when you're in the middle of the match and gpu drivers crashes.

Yeah it's a multi monitor thing. I'm only using two monitors and it sits at 500/1375.

I think it's fair to say that the 6970 has been somewhat difficult for a few people. Let's just hope some driver updates will sort it out.

I'm not getting anything like the temps you guys do though

IDLE: 50c and LOAD 90c if left with auto fan control.

Mine idles at 40-43c, not checked what it is when it crashes, will check my log file when i get back from work. Last thing i tried was underclocking it and ran a quick cs:source stress test. It crashed in like 1 sec at stock and about 20 underclocked so i guess that probably indicates temp. :-(

Hi, I am having the same issue as the OP. Slightly different system but I'm back to running my crossfire 5770s until this 6970 gets better drivers, or it's RMA'd. Mine crashes within seconds of starting Heaven, or 3dMark11, WoW, or anything else using Graphics.

Highest temp I saw on my 6970 was 49C the instant of a crash, and I didn't see the load (I was doing Heaven). The 5770s run ~67C at full 100% load.

ASUS P6TD Deluxe 608 Bios
Intel i950
6 x 2GB PNY XLR8 1600Mhz DDR3
3 x 500GB WD
Ultra X3 1kw PSU
CoolerMaster HAF 932 Case

When I update drivers I use the ATI Install Manager to express Uninstall, then use DriverSweeper to remove any bits left behind.

10.12a seems stable so far on my 5770s.

Picks up slippery spanner...............

Does this not sound all that familiar as to what was said at the time of release of the 5870 ?????:D:p

Hi thought of something since you may be switching cards between your 5770 and 6970.

Make sure ATI Overdrive's Core clock isn't set to the 5770s when you have the 6970 installed. The 6970s clock is 880Mhz not 930Mhz or whatever your 5770 is set to. The Uninstall/Reinstall doesn't seem to reset the clocks. A stock 6970 will not likely run at 930 Mhz.

I have my 2nd 6970 now and it's fine. I RMA'd the first one and should be getting a new one any day. Crossfire :)

Hi,

I had stability issues with 1 6970. I had the same lockups on multiple i7 MBs from a few manufacturers. I did several things to solve these issues.

1. manually set all the MB paramaters (voltages). QPI needs to be 1.25-1.28 it seems. I also set IOH to 1.25 and IOH PCI-E to 1.65v

2. Make sure EnableUlps is 0 in the registry.

3. make sure you have enough juice. when I installed my 2nd 6970 heaven crashed. My PSU was a 1kw Ultra. I now have a Ultra 1.6kw PSU and no issues at all.

Finally these cards run hot. Dont use the automatic fan. It's worthless.
