Hi all

My friend has a PC we have been trying to patch WoW to Patch 3.0.2 but it gets to 40% and crashes every time. I just changed the GFX to see if that improved matters but no joy, I can only assume it is a hardware issue as I have got the same patch from two different places to ensure it wasn't the patch itself.

I upgraded the PSU not so long ago.

He has the rig in my signiture, any thoughts appreciated.

Wouldn't this be more likely to be a pure software (WoW) issue? I'd guess you'll have more luck on the game support forums.

If it was a memory issue it seems unlikely it would always crash at 40% with two different patch files, more likely it gets stuck on messing with a file or a corrupt cache. My experience of MMO patch process is that it sucks and has a gadzillion potential points of error that are usually resolved by deleting a load of stuff out of the game directory (usually in a cache or patch folder), reinstalling the client or using a different patch version.

If you mean the PC physically crashes (i.e. a hard freeze or BSOD) then yeah it doesn't look like software but I assumed you meant the patcher crashes or CTDs.

To clarify, it does not even get to patching it, it is unpacking it as far as I can make out. It is a large patch 1.62gb iirc. The whole thing shuts down, power off, the lot :|

Ahh right, yeah, probably nothing to do with the client then.

Still.... always 40%?...

I don't think it would cause a shut down (program crash maybe...) but is there enough space on the drive to unpack it to?

Edit: Hah, I ninja'd Loque, reflexes not what they were, huh?

My disk/wow crashed occasionally with my previous hdd (it was a few years old). Bought a new one and have never had that problem again.

Isn't there another way to patch wow without using the automatic update?? I think there was a way you can download the whole patch file and install it maybe want to look into that

If you've already downloaded the patch you can just execute it anyway. In vista they sit under c:\users\public\docs or something similar. I imagine you'll find them somewhere similar on XP.
