Hi guys, have a 4870 i RMA'd as the fan kept stopping and the card would overheat and shut the PC down.

It took 5 weeks to get a replacement and in the meantime i borrowed a x1300xt from a friend.

I'm a WoW player and really don't have any other newish games.

Uninstalled the x1300xt, reinstalled the 4870 and it bombs out when loading WoW, with different texture errors, character selection is ok. Have run 3DMark06 fine - http://service.futuremark.com/compare?3dm06=10534720

Have reinstalled WoW, removed 9.2's (and ran drivercleaner) and installed 9.3's.

What other tests can i run to confirm the cards had it (strange it gets 'fixed' and isn't working correctly?)

Thanks :)

The fan is working and the card is back from being RMA'd from that as its initial fault.

Installed Unreal Tournament 2004 and played that for 30 mins on everything max settings, smooth as pie and didn't skip a beat... Yet WoW still refuses to load?

Have you tried looking on the WOW website? It might have something to do with the software.

Below are some of the errors i've had! :)

I did complete driver uninstalls and used 'Driver Sweeper' to remove anything left over, then installed latest cats (first 9.2's then 9.3's)

At the moment i'm not 100% convinced my cards sorted, when i got up this morning my PC was off, checking the event log and it reports it shutdown because the graphics card overheated. I rebooted and within a few mins my card was upto 85 degrees and i then see the fan had stopped aswell. I've now enabled overdrive and manual fan control (at 100%) so seeing how it behaves...

I did a complete WoW uninstall & reinstall before (using the client download from the website) and it automatically patched everything (patches still in the old install folder). I tried the 'World of Warcraft - repair' facility a couple of times and it always found something to download and fix. I thought nothing of it at the time, but now i'm dubious!

This time i've renamed the old WoW folder after uninstalling and have run the same install program, just working through downloading all the patches needed now incase one of my previous ones was corrupted in some way? It's been going for 8 hours so far (only have 2mb DSL) and until i'm fully patched i'm going to keep an eye on my cards fan behaviour! :)

If youre having the same issue with more than one card Id be tempted to think its the PSU not delivering a consistent current, do you have a spare PSU you caould try? maybe borrow one off a mate or somat?

Have just completed a full wow install and all patches. No difference.

Fitted a second (older) PSU onto 1 of the extra power plugs on the GFX card (i don't have another PSU with the right connections for this new kit) and thats made no difference.

An Enermax Pro82+ (385W) should be able to cope with the setup i have shouldn't it? (the fact it worked to start with? Just the card frying itself as the fan was faulty?)

no, thats your problem, you need more than 385W, especially if its old, they lose efficiency over time and its prob not putting out any where near 385 now, pick yourself up something 5-600

Well it has a combined 30A on the 12v rail, which is barely enought for a 4870.

The PSU may or may not be the problem.

Best thing is to try the card on another PC with WOW.

The Pro82+ is the same age as the 4870 (3 months) and it worked fine for a month?

Going to check my rails etc when i have time.

The 4870 is still overheating and stopping its fan (even with it forced on in CCC) so looks like another RMA is in order, i just hope they replace the card now rather than leave me in the loop for 6 weeks only to have the same card back... Unfixed! :(

Would a dodgy card possibly corrupt the WoW textures? Would that explain my x1300xt problems after trying the 4870 on a working WoW install? Sounds very odd, but i suppose anythings possible?! Gonna try a repair install of WoW and run memtest overnight (ran hard drive checks last night) :)
