Crashing when gaming.

Hi guys.
I really need your help. I am close to dispair with my bloody PC.

I have an asus p6t deluxe, asus gtx285, core i7, 3gbs of ram and 700w piperock supply.

When the gtx285 is in the computer, it crashes when gaming. Everything else is ok. Furmark,pcmark05, 3dmark06, superpi, heavyload it plays them all with out even getting out of breath. All the temps are low.

When i install an 8400gs (palit), games play fine. Its a £25 card......!

Why would a card that cost £25 play games that a £300 card wont?

The gtx is my third card, the two others were over heating. This card stays cool, but still crashes.

I have run memtest and it seems ok. It is not the harddrive as i have tried two.

I am only running a 17"monitor.

Could it possibly be the power supply? The more expensive card would require more power from the two 6pin plugs. As where the cheap card runs off the pciexpress slot.

The only other thing i could think of would be the memory, or the motherboard. I may as well just send back the whole computer. Everything is brand new from OcUk except the harddrive.

Please, any suggestions would be great.

I would say the psu is not up to the job

You need to give the forum the full specification and please make sure you quote the operating system and the game (s) that are causing you the problem!

Thats what i thought mate. But on the other hand furmark would really work the graphics card.(but maybe not everything together). My other two cards were bfgs, and the tech support guy told me that when a system crashes like this, it is usually the PSU. Looks like he could have been right.

I thought 700watts would cut it though.

I know nothing about PSUs, but i saw somewhere on my pc, the 12v rail was running just under 12volts. Do you know of a program for checking the voltages?

I have an asus p6t deluxe. Asus gtx285. intel core i7 920 2.66Ghz. Tagan piperock TG700-BZ. Corsair 3GB ddr3 XMS3 pc3-10666c9 1333Mhz triple channel DDR3 (TR3x3g1333c9). Akasa AK-967 Nero cpu cooler. LG gh22ns30 22x dvd recorder. Antec 1200 gaming case.

It crashes on every game. Far Cry, Halflife, Stalker. The one i allways try is half-life lost coast the video stress test. The cheap card blitz it. With the gtx it crashes after a couple of seconds. The only way to restart the computer is to turn the power off.

Nearly forgot, i am running windows XP service pack 2. (32bit). IIyama 17" Prolite e431s Logitech mouse and keyboard.

I think you have two choices! The video card or the power supply. My Tagan went in the bin because of a similar problem. They were supposed to be the dog's, but all the other manufacturers have caught up. The only way to solve the problem is by component replacement and that is too expensive. Where did you get the nVidia 285 from? I would suggest you get that tested first then have a good look at the power supply as already suggested.

Both power supply and psu came from overclockers. Its the third card i have had. do you think they will take another one back?

Ring them and ask their advice. To be honest, the cheapest way is to send one back at a time for test after telling them what is happening. Did they supply as a system or individual components? If it is a system, then you are covered, as they will have sold a system with a power supply that had enough headroom for most upgrades.

All the components were sold seperatley. I put the pc together myself. I think i shall send both back in the same box. I have gone past caring about the price. I just want the computer to work. I have been dreaming of this system for ages. Thought it would be a great experience, to catch up with technology, and be able to buy some modern games. Instead its tuned into a nightmare (An expensive nightmare).

Thanks for your advice mate. I am in the middle of sending them a webnote explaining everything. (last time i rung i got no where). I dont care if they both work, at least then i can cross them off the list of possables.
