Hi all,
I've recently had an issue whereby I'll open up the one game I play (Escape from Tarkov) and can get to the initial menu fine - but when loading up the game proper, my screen goes black and I need to reboot to get back to a useable PC. I've only the one game installed so I've checked on the Heaven benchmark software and get the same.
First thought is that it's either a GPU or PSU issue. My GPU is a 980 Ti Hybrid. The fan is spinning when I boot up the system - both on the card and on the radiator fan. My PSU is an EVGA 850W EVGA GOLD-2. Both are approx. 5-6 years old.
I've been using EVGA PrecisionX and also HWInfo to check temps at the point of crashing and it's only about 50C when the crash happens.
I've tried underclocking (via EVGA PrecisionX) by knocking down the power target to 75% and it's slightly more stable. I can run a less intensive part of the game now but still the main game still can't get past loading the main game (for anyone who knows EFT - I can access the hideout but can't get into a raid).
Not sure how useful this is but playing some music in a different application while loading - the screen goes black as normal but the music still plays for a good 10 seconds before it appears a full crash happens.
I've got an EVGA 670 FTW spare and I'm planning on trying to swop to that card to see how it runs....but it's got a different power socket - it needs 2x6 pin rather than the 6 and 6+2 my 980 Ti uses. I can't seem to find the cable on the web for that - there's adaptors but I'm looking for a straight cable from the PSU to the card to keep things simple. I've asked EVGA if they could recommend a cable.
I've also cleaned the drivers with DDU and reinstalled - no joy there.
So, I'm a bit stuck and clueless on how best to further diagnose what the issue is. Would really appreciate any ideas!
I'd have probably bought a new GPU to solve this but with the market being a bit of a mess with the 3000 series stock - it seems daft to buy something which is quickly gonna be old at an overinflated price for the sake of waiting a short while....
EDIT - underclocking to 60% seems to give me a nearly stable game now (will crash periodically but certainly a big step forward).
