Hi all, just sharing a minor success. I built my own NAS from Ubuntu Server rather than taking a canned solution like FreeNAS, as I am sure many of you have done. I wanted an off site backup solution but they all seemed to be for Windows or OS X which was a pain because backups were only happening when the desktop was on (while the NAS is on 24-7) and only data from one machine was getting backed up (not from my laptop for example). Well, I happened to check the Crashplan site yesterday and i noticed that they can run on Linux too!
The solution works brilliantly and is very simple. You simply install crashplan on your headless server. Then, to configure it you install crashplan on your device with a GUI (win/osx/linux). You set up an SSH tunnel between the GUI machine and the headless server and then point the crashplan GUI client down that tunnel (rather than at the locally installed instance).
It's dead simple and works brilliantly. Since my NAS is on 24-7 it means my backups are working continuously. I use Robocopy to sync any folders that are local to my desktop machine or laptop on to the NAS and then the NAS backs all of that data up for me too all from that one Crashplan account.
Hope that helps someone.
