I,m getting random CRC errors on anything i install either from disc or download files. Anyone any ideas what can be causing this. I have tried different dvd drives, Re-downloading files but i still get the same. Any help would be much appreciated.

Cheers

bad dvd drive?
bad overclock?
bad ram?
bad hard drive?
bad sata cables?
bad motherboard?

Tried 2 dvd drives and get the same, I have run memtest on the ram and all shows ok, I ran prime all night last night on a torture test and all was still running fine this morning showing no errors. Tried a different hard drive and still the same. Not tried a sata cable will give it a go. Could be the motherboard but how would i test would prime and mem test have tested this. ?

I have never been able to install Dragonage either from the dvd or copying to hard drive. I even downloaded an image file but still the same. My digital download of mass effect now also does the same but worked fine before ?

Would re-installing windows be beneficial. ?

Cheers

try dropping the overclock first

ram voltages ok?

also, I've had bad memory sticks that pass ALL memory tests, but do still cause problems, it's rare, but I've seen this twice.

Bad hard drive.

Its probably on its last legs. Back-up those important files, reinstall windows, if it keeps doing it, change HD and see if it continues.

Oops, you tried a new HD..

In that case, stock everything, reinstall windows.

Also, when you say you've tried another drive, how did you try another one?

Installed windows fresh on it, then tried?

What AV do you use?

Ok i have dropped the overclock my Ram voltages are 1.8v. I have 3 hard drives in my system an 80gb i use for winodows, a 500gb i use for games and a 250 gb i use for downloads. I have tried installing windows onto the 500gb but it was the same.

I,m running 9x450 in the bios with everything set to auto, apart from my Ram timings they are set to 2:2 400mhz ? i belive which runs my memory at 850mhz as far as i can remember.

i use microsoft security essentials as my AV.

just installing mass effect now will see how it goes..

Cheers

Ok mass effect installed fine with no errors with everything at stock..?

Now i need to work out what part of my overclock is causing the problem. Not sure what to start with.. I,m thinking it could be my 800mhz memory is not liking the overclock..?

Seems a bit weird that i can run anything with my overclock with no problems at all, Just installing gives me issues.. ?

I'm pretty sure windows only does crc's on disks - hard disks, flash drives, dvd's and the like. I'd guess it's something to do with stuff being cached in memory when writing to the hard disk during an install, and giving a crc error because it's becoming corrupted in memory before it's written, due to your memory overclock.

This is pure guesswork, but seems to be the only thing that makes sense given what you've checked already. I've never had much luck overclocking memory, it always seems to cause weird and unpredictable issues.

CRC errors in my experience are almost exclusively down to faulty memory or drives, odds on it being your memory not coping with the overclock.

I,m looking this way now i just cant understand why in use overclocked i get no problems at all. Even running 16 hours of prime torture test showed no errors. It just seems to be when extracting zip files in some installations it has problems. It just does not make much sense to me..:(

Have just ordered a pair of twin x 8500 sticks as they are on offer this week.. hopefully this will sort out the problem..

I'd run memtest before buying more ram.

I have just run mem test and @ 4ghz i got an error on the 2nd run through. At stock it was fine. When i did it before it was fine @4ghz for over an hour. ?

I have ordered the memory now :( I cant see what else it could be other than my 800mhz Ram is not up to the job with the Cpu @ 4ghz.. ?

Different programs use system resources in different ways and while dedicated stress test tools are good enough to do a top job 99% of the time there is always an exception.

I had a rig a few years back that ran absolutely fine everything I threw at it while overclocked, benchmarks, stress test etc etc all except one program, that program without fail would always crash without exception if the rig was overclocked even when everything else pointed to it being a completely stable system.

I have just installed dragonage with out any errors now as well....

I,m 99% sure this is a ram problem, will find out hopefully tomorrow when my 1066 Ram arrives..

You may just need to up the voltage a bit on the ram

What were you running it at?

My Ocz ram is rated 2.2v (1.8 is my board default)

It's very unstable unless I set it to 2.2

also, knock your NB up by 0.1

Glad you've at least partly identified where the problem lies (the overclock)

The mem is rated at 1.8v i have tried taking the voltage up a bit but it becomes unstable and fails to boot into windows. I have just been running it at auto as it seems to work (Did)..

I have tried adding a bit to the NB but it did not make any difference tbh was still getting the CRC fails. I,m not 100% what all the settings on my board do as there is loads..
