Creaking whilst turning?

Hey,

Anyone hazard a guess at this :

My car has developed a creak/groan whilst turning at certain points lock to lock. I can 'feel' it through the steering wheel and almost the body of the car.

It appears to come from the right side, and typically has started when I'm meant to be driving to Minehead tomorrow :(

I assume it's possibly dangerous so shall be taking it to be looked at tomorrow but I think it's going to put my trip out of action

Thanks

Yeah check that for sure.

Last week my car was creaking a bit, yesterday the damn left rear shock tower made a break from the rest of the body shell :/

Sick of throwing money at the bloody thing! Road tax to buy tomorrow too - 220 of my 'great' british pounds!

If its dangerous can anyone suggest a hire company that hire out decent cars in Cornwall?

Could be a number of things but I would first check the top mounts on the front suspension as they could be worn.

MOT advisory had something about slight play in top mount 'something'! Sorry it escapes me -

I shall go check and update!

Edit : Nearside front macpherson strut has slight play at the upper mounting?

Most likely this.

Pop the bonnet and turn the engine on, look at the top mounts in the front suspension turrets.. take off any plastic caps so you can see rubber/metal.. turn wheel full lock both directions, look for any movement.

This could be a stupid question : But if it's making noise I shouldn't do a trip in it tomorrow?

Although it isn't advised many people do travel with this noise for months! It sounds like the top mount bearing has gone. Still ok to drive but needs to be replaced if it is the bearing. Although play in the top mount isn't normally the bearing from my own experience.

How far is the trip?

How loud is the noise? How much play is there?

It's a 320 mile round trip from here to just outside of Minehead and back.

The noise it makes is only at certain points of turning from lock to lock but it is loud.

I'd also bet on a seized top mount bearing. If it is this, it'll be applying torsion to the coil spring which could cause spring failure in the worst case.

The noise will probably be the spring twisting in the seized top mount bearing.

My car also judders/grumbles when on full lock and in motion - Not sure what car you have but if it has an LSD then it might be that as it's normal for LSDs to cause a judder when one wheel is turning far more than the other. That wouldn't explain why it has just developed though.

I wish I still had the only car I've ever had an LSD in, but alas no. Its a dagadagadaga Bora.

Typically I've been down town today to get road tax and it hasn't made this noise once

I've now agreed to work tomorrow as I didn't fancy driving any distance in it too!
