'65 Polara Wagon on Ebay US

Want one.

Let's get the usual Motors objections dealt with in this opening post shall we? Yes, it's American and big and therefore will not corner like a Porsche. Yes, it has some surface rust. Yes, there are a great many more modern and more European cars that are much better. Yes, it chews fuel like a 747.

Do I care? Nope. Should I care? Nope. And all for one good reason: It's a great big ratty looking station wagon with a hoofing great V8 engine. :D

So tempted to buy it. So, so, so tempted. Can't really afford it of course, even if I sold the Oldsmobile I couldn't really afford it. Just hope that some of these cars are still available by the time I get to a position where I can buy one......

but if your spending all thet money on shipping is it not worth waiting for the pefect one to appear?

Thing is, you don't get perfect unless you pay fairly ridiculous money. And to my mind, that example really is perfect for my diabolical purposes. Hence my being a little saddened that circumstances don't allow me to have it :)

I would have thought even minor problems would be a pain to sort out overhere, but having another american car already i am sure you know more about that than me

Any problem with an American car is a pain, usually because any problem that stops an American car of that era working is pretty catastrophic!

Buy it. Slam it. Torq-Thrusts. Done.

Nah. If in the next few days I somehow found the money for it I reckon I'd leave it just as it is now. Can't go much lower without chopping up the torsion bars anyway, and I like the wheels it has now so I wouldn't replace those.

Now this one on the other hand.....this one I would modify.

It's cool because despite being a 1965 car, it has full electric windows and air conditioning.

Thats cool.

It has a Wedge 413 motor. That's a B series motor like the 383, 400, and 440. Those motors were very good for their time but you'll have a hell of a time trying to get parts for it, especially in the UK. You'll end up having to grab N.O.S. parts from the US whenever you need them. It's a fine idea but you'd best have a thick bankroll first.

383s and 413s were made as 'B' engines, the 440 was one of the 'RB' (Raised Block, i.e. raised deck height) engines which included a few 383s, 413s and the 426 Max Wedge. I am going from memory there though, so I could be wrong. Parts - there's a few people in the UK who do get bits for them from time to time, and I have family in North America who can send bits along to me. Anyway, moot point really as I can't afford it :)

Meh, there are loads of other V8's that fit :D

Hemi crate motor? *slurp* Be a pity to lose the wedge, but if it ever did blow up a Hemi would be a tasty little addition.

*Sigh* Always a few that don't realise automotive perfection when they see it :p

i'd just keep my eye on the american classics section of ebay and just keep waiting...

Thats where I got my current wagon, the Olds :)

***edit***

And I just had a quick look on there again. Two things caught my eye in particular:

64 Pontiac wagon

'64 Pontiac Parisienne wagon with a 283ci Chevy engine. Slightly under-engined for the traffic light GP, but fine as a cruiser. Plus, it's a really cool colour :)

Oh noes!!!!!1111

Olds 88. This is the series of car that my Olds wagon is based off - except this one has the single worst engine any American manufacturer ever managed to create....the 350ci V8 diesel. They had a nasty habit of grenading themselves in fairly spectacular fashion. The car is based in Coventry, I might e-mail and ask if I can go take a look before the auction ends. I've never seen one of these engines actually in one piece.....
