A friends macbook pro has a corrupted hard drive and he has asked me to recover his important files for him.

I have tried the usual first aid etc and am now looking to boot his laptop from a USB drive to copy the files across before attempting to restore from the other partition. Yet can I find a decent 10.12.dmg or iso file and software to format the usb drive on PC ?

Pointers to a good source for a PC utility and dmg/iso file please...

If you just want to get the file off the HDD then you could create a bootable live linux usb and use that (most will read MacOS file systems as long as they're not filevault encrypted).

If you're looking to create install media from Windows, have a look at gibMacOS.

Just tried an Ubuntu boot from USB key, failed to read the mac drive using 'files' (OS X Base System, error mounting....) yet 'disks' app claims its fine.
