Create my own website advice??

Hi there,

I'm looking to build a simple website for a friend for as little money as possible hence why i've volunteered to do it.

Could you kind people offer some advice/tips please? My questions are:

1. Should i buy some software/or go to some website that offers websites in template form already?

2. Build my own but with what software?

3. Hosting it... who and how much?

4. Need a simple site where the images can be replaced/uploaded by my friend and any pop ups or links to pdf files can be done by my friend also? (so something user friendly?)

As your friend wants to be able to edit some of the content then your best bet would be to use something like wordpress with a free or paid theme.

Hosting vidahost and tsohost seem popular in the UK.
 
awesome, always reassuring to get more than one person to recommend the same thing :)

just been on the wordpress website and it looks pretty straight forward!.. so cool that it's all free!!! :)

Just check the domain name and it's available too!

Do i have to buy the domain name from the same place that it's going to host my website? (sorry if this is a really noob question!)
 
So do TSO Host. I'd highly recommend going with them. My business use them and their CS is utterly superb. If you need a hand getting anything sorted, give me a shout.
 
hey thanks guys!

I don't think tso host gives me a free domain? (been clicking around and i think it's around £7 for it).

I'm a bit confused with a couple of things:

1. linux or windows hosting???

2. default namerservers?? er.. shall i use the default or er.. what?
 
With cPanel (which you get with TSOhosts by default) its insanely easy to set up a wordpress site by just using the inbuilt wordpress installer.
 
now sure how that works but it certainly sounds good!!! :P

so here's my plan for this evening:

1. sign up to the cheapo £15 option for tsohost + £7 for domain name
2. download Wordpress and install
3. start messing around

Anything else i need to know?

Seriously... search google for free wordpress theme and browse through them.

Think about what features you want for the site. Search google for plugins to do it.
Go to youtube or google when you get stuck and search there is loads of help for wordpress online.
 
right all done and sorted with tso host :)

anyone know where i can get some logo designs free/low cost? i don't mind paying a little bit of money for some ideas but not hundreds!

right, i've just installed wordpress via cpanel.

it's provided me with a 'hello world' temporary web page which is nice :P

So where do i go from here? I'm a bit lost now???
 
Check out the wordpress website, lots of info on there.

You'll need to use a template to make it look the way you like, look at plugins if you want it to connect to twitter/facebook etc.

Then you'll need to add content via blog posts or static pages.
