Hi All

This is a bit of a tuff one so im not sure if anyone will be able to help or not but i thought id ask.

A friend has asked me to design a network. He wants to impress his boss so he can get the training needed to implement the network.

The network will be based on 1000BASE-T UTP cable using a class B subnetting structure. And will have 6 segments/subnets. probably using an extended star layout.

However i am a bit out of my league as i have never used Gbit routers/switches etc etc . so if anyone could recommend me some good products. To help me get this thing going that would be great.

Im guessing ill need a router switches for each segment patch panels etc etc . Any links to products would also be great if not better so i can read up on them and make the best decision.

Thanks for any help

That's Cat5e (min) or Cat6(recommended), not '<speed> <cable>' :)

Sounds like you don't have a clue :/

I'm with the sprout on this one... ;)

So.. your mate wants you to design him a network so he can get in with the boss? And yet neither of you have ever designed anything like this before? Maybe time for some homework.

To answer one question - there is no real difference between a 1GB network and a 100MB one. Except for the cost of the kit, and ideally using Cat6 cables (though a cheapskate could skimp with quality Cat5e). Do you even need GB speeds?

And how many machines are you trying to network? What do you need a class B network for? Working in the class C space should be easier for you.
