Creating a User Template

I’ve had to take over installation of software for a colleague. Unfortunately, this is my first foray into MacOS!

I have twenty Macs that are going to connect to an AD managed Windows domain (but that's another hilarious story!)

He created an image for the Macs but after doing so was given several armfuls of additional software by the lecturers at our College.

He has installed this new software under a local admin account, but I’m pretty sure he didn’t run any of it.

I need to create a default user /template account so that each user gets the dock with the icons on that he has so nicely set up.

I’ve tried using the root user to copy the Desktop, etc folders into a new user called Default. When I log in as Default or a test network account the dock items don’t change.

(I've seen a couple of guides but all seem to assume that the software is initially run under the default user. I'd prefer not to have to try and go around the room and re-install multiple software packages - and license keys - to each of the machines.)

If I can’t get the students to pick up the default template when they logon with their network accounts then as a fall back position I want to create a local user with the software on the dock/installed. I tried creating a local user but that didn’t work either.

I have until close of play Friday to get this sorted as the class is going to be starting first thing Monday morning.

The question is: what do I need to do under Lion to turn the local admin account into a template account or simply copy its settings to another?

Can you not use migration wizard to add the additional software to each Mac? Shouldn't take long and can be done via network.
