Hello,

Lately i was thinking about creating a own website with the following purpose:

1. Clan website
A simple website that displays some general information about the team, some results etc etc.

2. Video website
More like a youtube player where i can place(link) my videos and fragmovies so people can watch them in a player.

So i was thinking about getting a domain and make some sort of portal on the frontpage of them website where u can decide to go to the video page or the clanpage.

But since i dont know **** about this subject i dont actually know where to start, what programs to use, what the important things are when looking for a domain.

Should i get some books first about websites etc before i start?

Lots of questions and i hope someone can tell me step by step what is best to do in my case!

Thanks in advance

Don't buy a domain/hosting till you know what you're doing.

What you're asking can either be a HUGE project or a small one. Start by learning some HTML/CSS. There's plenty of good learning sites out there.

Once you can create a really simple layout, just to see how it all works. Then get a template. Plenty of free ones out there.

http://www.oswd.org/

Then use the template and completely modify it all to get a better understanding.

Once you feel confident, either use a template (google for one) for your site or try your hand at creating one from scratch (good luck).

If you wish to take a simpler route, slightly lazy. Look into Wordpress or Joomla/Mambo. CMS systems. You can also find free themes for them

Regarding video. Suggest you upload to youtube then embed it (for now).

I don't get why you would want a website that basically replicates youtube functionality unless you just link to youtube anyway. If it was to become remotely popular the bandwidth costs would be enormous. If you just want a domain and link to youtube that is soooooo very easy to do and any cms system would suffice!

dude for what you want, look at the CMS Platforms -
PHPNuke,
Joomla

are but a few, maybe buy a CHEAP domain @ a fiver and a cheap host that can provide CPanel, this will act as your foundation, will have hundreds of scripts you can install from the click of a button

Wordpress sounds ideal for what your looking for 100% agree with hosting vids on youtube although i do know some cheapish hosts who will give u unlimited bandwidth accounts.

Hi Roy. If you don't mind you can visit my Twitter account(@nazroot) and download the domain and hosting guide for free on my profile. Maybe you will learn something from it.

Welcome along Nazroot.

You seem to be a nice enough chap, but a friendly word of warning, don't pimp yourself too much in your early days here. All it will look like is you want to drive traffic to your sites and it will get up people's noses. :)

As for starting out for web design, if you truly want to learn the ins-outs properly and maybe make it into a career then start from the bottom. There are plenty of free references out there for beginners, don't buy books, by the time you are finished learning (NB you never stop learning) the spec will have changed.

www.tizag.com is my favourite backbone resource, perfect for beginners too!

Sorry gord, got to disagree on your point about buying books :)

I consider myself a fairly competent programmer but am sometimes left asking myself why I do things a certain way and whether it could/should be done differently. Understanding the theory is very important in my opinion. I also think a book, as a single point of reference, can be very powerful as it will use similar language, terminology and naming conventions so that when learning a new topic ambiguity is kept to a minimum.

Granted, if he'd just doing a single web site and using a lot of third party technology he should be able to scrape by by looking on forums and so on; but for anyone wishing to take it remotely seriously then I think books are a must.

I agree, learning from a good book is also a lot easier as all the resources and tutorials should tie together with a common approach as opposed to learning from many peoples different styles from internet tutorials. It also means you won't miss things that may not come up from online tutorials. But then each to his own really :)

To the OP, from the way you phase your question I assume that you want to reach your end goal and not really learn web design for the sake of it so something like Wordpress + free webhosting + embedded Youtube videos would be the easiest route.
