Creating large PDF documents

At work we create large amounts of Home Information Packs which is around 40 colour pages.

Creating all that into a PDF documents takes an absolute age.

I've done this with a P4 2.8ghz and an X2 5000+ machine. The time difference between the two wasn't brilliant. Is there any point buying a machine with the best CPU out there at the moment?
