Creating matted Messy hair

At the moment I have naturally straight longish hair. As the emo trend of long, straight, black hair seems to be overtaking at the moment, I've decided to mess my hair up a bit and avoid claims that I use straighteners (which I don't).

Currently I'm using Schwarzkopf mess up gum and I used to use that surf wax stuff a while back however I find my hair never stays how I want it. Its ok for about 30 mins then it just goes flat again, even if I get my more "girly" mates to do it for me.

Anyone know any way of naturally allowing my hair to become messy and matted without resorting to excessive backcoaming? Eg special treatment or products.

Thanks in advance

on a serious note and an easy one, grab a towel and rub it round in circle on your head fairly hard for a while, its quick and will mat the hair up at the base rather quickly and isnt to much trouble to get out.

did it once after i got rid of my dreads the first time for a laugh

Brill idea, thanks mate, works a treat with a bit of wax. My hair just isn't long enough for dredds atm and I don't want have to start pulling out knots before I have to.

I did this with my hair, I didn't brush it for about 6 months (at a guess), in the end, I had to use a hairtie to keep it back, otherwise I had two big lumps like Princess Leia hair - I recently managed to get all of the knots and matt out, fairly painful and took me sodding ages to remove, now I like it how it is, straightish and smooth. :)

For the messed up look you need someone to 'chip' into your hair so it is all very slightly different lengths. If it is currently all the same length then you will not get the effect you are after.

As already mentioned, American Crew Fibre is the best product if you want it to look natural. Take a slightly larger than a pea sized amount, rub your hands together to warm it up and coat your hands in the stuff. Run your hands through your hair et voila!

Fudge do some good stuff too that will give you a more wet look, can't remember the name of it for the life of me though.

I am lucky that mny hair is curly as sin.
so, I wash it, let it dry on its own. then it gets all messy looking

not great lighting, and you need to grow it for about 14months :)
