Hi guys,

I don't usually deal with much Windows stuff so I'm a little out of touch. How do you sys-admins create your MSI installer packages?

I've downloaded WinInstallLE 2003 trial version and I can use the snapshot utility (discover.exe) to do a reasonable job. The only thing is I need to create an MSI for Sophos Anti-Virus 5 as we need certain default settings changed. Being an AV app is has services and when doing a snapshot it either doesn't pick these up, or if I try to start them again it spams me with an error saying the service cannot start.

Does anyone have any experience with this kind of stuff? Any tips?

Thanks.

Ahh, now we've had big problems with the new version of Sophos and services, even when trying to send it out with ranger package builder. The services never seem to start properly unless you install it manually :(

Pants! Not what I wanted to hear :D

You know if there is anyway to use a batch script to change settings, I guess I'll have to look into it ....

What changes are you making?

Its best to push out using the Sophos enterprise manager and then script the changes. Thats how I'd do it anyway.

Yeah, there is the enterprise management console as well as savadmin for the older version of sophos client. Only trouble is it doesn't work properly- most of the machines you can view in there complain that sophos is not installed so you can't install it remotely and the rest say platform is not supported and it takes an age to transfer status messages between console and client. Never had any problems with viruses getting though mind, just the management side of the new version is crap unlike the older version with savadmin which was on the whole pretty good :)

Well the main options I need to change once an install has been pushed out is the "email if virus found" and ondemand scanning options.
