creating network

i have recently bought a new pc and have my internet shared with a netgear dg834 router, a network cable going to each pc. can anyone help me and tell me how to set up a network with these two computers so that i can transfer files from one to the other and share a printer. i tried the windows network wizard but i couldnt get it to work cos i dont realy know what im doing. any help or links to guides would be extremely helpfull.

if you canl all share the same workgroup that will ba a good start

right i have a workgroup, my new computer can see the old one in when i click 'view workgrouped computers' but not access it, whereas on the old computer i click 'view workgrouped computers' it says...

'you might not have permission to use this network resource. contact the admin of this server to find out if you have access permission'

can anyone help me as to how to configure both computers to work together?

i installed the router on each computer without the other being on, this probably mean both are admins? and maybe are conflicting, any suggestions on how to set up the dg834 so that 1 pc is admin and the other can connect to the network for internet acces/file and printer sharing.

not sure what you are asking there but as for file sharing, you need to configure your network settings to enable file sharing. I am on a domain here so my options will be different from yours but if you cannot find it yourself someone here might post some screens of it.

there should be an option to share when you right click on the file or hd you want to share
