I have a set of Sennheiser HD 25-1 II's, had them at least 10yrs and have been sitting in my draw for at least 3yrs since letting go of Djing. I forgot about them all the while having poor/mediocre portable in ear phones for travel.

Anyway, I fancy a project, jazzing these up for mobile use. The pads need replacing, but also mass loading the cups and drivers and certainly changing out the steel high resistance cable.

I am happy with adding mass to the cups and drivers (I have Dynamat and stickyback lead strips left over from years of car audio), but I’ve not yet made my own replacement cable. What I’m wondering from you gents is who has done this before, and has it been a worthwhile success?

Is it as easy as choosing cable, cup plugs, jack type, soldering, gluing, possibly cable sleeving and go? Am I better off forking out £50/£60 for a ready done set or is this poor economy?

Cheers!

Yes, there is that argument, which is why I don't want to spend ££££... diminishing if any returns. I understand that the steel cable on the HD25s has a ridiculous 4ohm resistance, and that an "upgrade"cable for the phones can go as low as 0.6ohm, leaving more power for the drivers.... which will be good as these will be mainly phone/tablet driven when commuting.

Again, I am open to being corrected here by far more knowledgeable people in these things, I'm here as a novice

I also won't lie in that there's also a cosmetic itch that I want satisfy.... call it a hangover from case modding.

google "customcans" or "custom cans".

they sell modified hd25-1II's.

you can buy a mod from them which you insert into the ear cups for like £6 which is supposed to improve the quality a lot.

the hd25-1 II uses a steel cable iirc which is tought but not the best for SQ.

so yes you can upgrade the cable very easily. custom cans sell better cables too.

what you might bet better off doing though is just sending them your cans and getting a custom paint job and upgrade for £100-£200.
