Creative based spec (Titan Galahad)?

Hello all,

I am looking to update my workstation at home which seems to be slooooowly dying on me and needs thrown out the window.

I am a web based designer - Flash, Illustrator, CSS, .net, After Effects, Video editing and looking for a setup that will match my requirements. Not fussed about gaming.

I have been looking at a ready built system - Titan Galahad does anyone have one of these? I have heard that for After effects and Adobe apps that I am best with 64bit and an Intel chipset?

Would consider putting something myself but have no idea how to best configure a reliable and a reasonably powerful system.

Gurus I ask you for help.

Cheers

Stukid

i would go with a Quad core, either Intel or AMD, either are pretty good, AMD are cheaper than Intel.

Cheers for this.

How does this compare to the titan galahad? is this spec faster better? i am noob on this kind of stuff.

cheers

well if you was to add the same OS to the Titan Galahad and the 9800GTX in the option box, it would take the price well over £700, perhaps you dont need such a reasonable graphics card, you could take it down to a Ati 4760 or wait for a Ati 4770.

the RAM is better, as it is DDR3, so should be faster than the DDR2 memory given, (not sure tho)

as for the CPU well....it would knock its socks off to be honest.

also AM3 is a newer socket than intels old 775 socket, so more future upgrades with the AM3 board and DDR3 memory, also the CPU is a smaller die shrink, so it will run cooler than the Intel.

Even the 4770 is overkill for your needs, a 4550 or 4350 would probably be fine. The money's better spent on CPU and hard drive for this sort of thing.

sorry, only been catching up on new hardware over the past couple of months, dont know a thing about the older GFX cards, going off Quixote's idea i changed the GPU to a 4350, which gives you a new total of £584.90

cool and cheers.

i have been seeing the Intel Core i7 coming up allot for video production.

I am looking to get more into video and 3D and rendering movies is going to be a bigger thing so i imagine upwards of 6g+ ram would be beneficial and powerful cpu etc.

would i be future proof with this example setup you have put together here?

regarding i7, yes they are brilliant at Video encoding, multi tasking, doing any sort of graphical work, rendering images etc, but deep down it is just a new Quad Core CPU with some fancy tech to make it that much better, i looked at some benchmarks for the x2 945 vs the C2Q that the Titan Galahad came with and the AMD CPU was better by a lot, as for the i7 920 vs Phenom 2 x4 945 the 920 beats it.

the AM3 boards have just been released with the new DDR3 memory to support it.

i7 boards also support DDR3 memory in the form of triple channel, AM3 boards are still Dual. DDR3 memory can only get faster and will be able to get 4x 2gb sticks to give you 8gb of RAM total, or 4x 4gb sticks to give you 16gb in the future.

in the for seeable future, you would be set for 2-3 years i reckon, doing what your doing, perhaps upgrading the CPU as AMD have 6 core CPU's due out some time within the next year.

up untill then expect new CPU's from AMD to support AM3 boards for some time, only drawback i can see in the list is the lower wattage PSU, but seeing how yours tasks are not GPU intensive, as long as you dont upgrade to something bigger i dont see why you would need a more powerfull PSU (PSU's only provide the hardware what they need, a 1,000 watt PSU would only draw 450W from the wall if thats all it needs, the 1,000Watts just gives you more headroom)

as regards building your computer, it can be pretty straightforward. it gets difficult when installing aftermarket CPU coolers that are bigger and more efficient at cooling the CPU, large graphics cards, watercooling etc.

if you follow the instructions given by the motherboard, it should be plain sailing.

if you really had some money to spend, and wanted to go i7 heres a budget spec using some componants from the old spec, just new RAM, Mobo and CPU.

After a bit more reading I'm wanting to go the intel route and if i go with i7 now, I will be able to build on this for the future I hope.

how does this look - not really different from above. would this have any issues?

I already have a new seagate sata 720g hd. suppose the only item i would need is a sound card that works well with Vista.

any thoughts on this setup appreciated.

cheers

just have a look on google to see how they fair against each other, the 4890 'should' be faster at gaming, but on the other hand you said you wasnt interested in gaming and the spec was for web based designs, tbh if you was to get an i7 machine, you obviously have the money, i'd go with either a GTX275 or the Ati 4890 or a 4870X2, i think you need to think about what the machine is for :)
