I'm buying the k712 on black Friday and Id like an amp dac combo.

The creative g6 is £70 (B stock)
Fiio k5 pro will be around £130-140

In games like csgo/call of duty do you want vss turned off so you can hear footsteps better?

Is vss a gimmick? Does it really give a more immersive experience in games?

Will the k5 pro give me an overall better experience than the g6?

PS the x2hrs are trash for imaging I DO NOT recommend

Cant answer your gaming side of question since don't game but we know Creative at least cater for gamers sound feature wise.

I have been keeping an eye on the G6 since creative got the B stock at that amazing low 70 quid price tag, the same for the K5 pro too.

G6 is supposedly a very power headphone amp with high quality performance for headphones:
https://www.reddit.com/r/SoundBlast...reative_sound_blaster_g6_vs_x3_maybe_the_ae7/

Even creative and a customer compare the new Creative X3 to the older G6 and both found the G6 more powerful and better, link above.

From what I have read about the K5 Pro here:
https://www.head-fi.org/threads/fii...ifier-is-now-available-globally.913889/page-2
https://www.reddit.com/r/headphones/comments/cjkouz/fiio_k5_pro_fiio_first_desktop_dac_amplifier/

Its an excellent dac/headphone amp but it maybe lacking on the power side of things so it may not provide the power for the really demanding headphones.
But otherwise its sound quality is meant to be pretty good and decent detail in sound too.

Where did you see the Fiio k5 pro for 130-140 ? the ali place is out of stock.

Importing from US rain forest + buying a UK plug

I'm considering k712 or the 990 at the moment mostly leaning k712 due to the apparent dt 990 spike in the highs

Just make sure you have effects/sound processing disabled, because those will guaranteedly mess binaural cues seriously.

Listener's head shape differing from average would also achieve that.
Which is why we should have had Super X-Fi like customizable HRTF years ago.

Fidelios should do quite well.
Unless all the hype I've heard about them has been just audiofoolery BS.
Laws of the physics just order that if you feed headphones speaker stereo signal, only immersion you'll get is sound "inside left or right ear, or in center of the head".
Just like in that first link.

The x2s are "fun" that's it. They're awful for competitive. Sometimes footsteps seem close but they're actually far away and vice versa. It does left and right imaging but everything else you have to critically listen to know where footsteps are coming from. If you dig deeper as I have there's many people that say they suck for imaging.

According to Mad Lust Envy's guide DT880 is actually worser for positioning than DT990, despite of DT990's stronger bass.
But I trust to that considering my own experiencies of headphones listed by him.

Have you been able to try the k712?

How is the k712 compared to the 990 in "fun" and competitive? I've heard the k712 adds a but more bass compared to the other akgs but is it still bass light?

I've also read that the k712 has accurate imaging but central imaging is a bit blurry.

The 990s worry me due to how bright everybody makes them out to be.

I own Beyer DT990 and couple years ago bought AKG K712+second hand K702 for that neutral reference.
(+"retired" tape keeping parts from falling HD595 Sennheiser)

K712's bass is pretty equal to DT990, though not fully.
Anyway you don't want more bass than that general amount, because any lower frequency sounds would fast start burying simultaneous details seriously.
Or you would have to make own equalizer profile for more competitive gaming.
That's where K702 has clear advantage with accurate neutral bass keeping details always more easily distinguishable.
Obviously at the expense of at best average "fun factor" with bass neutral HRTFs of Creative. (Dolby Headphone's bloated bass still just barely tolerable)

In details K712 wins about same amount. Though in some sounds DT990 did better in side by side comparison.
Likely because of K712's frequency response having dip around 3kHz while in comparison DT990 is flat in there.
(Headphone.com used to have superb tool for comparing frequency responses)

Headphone profiles of Creative's Super X-Fi (available for DT770-990 models but not K712) would no doubt make that completely moot point in positioning accuracy.
And without clear and easy time difference cues front and rear direction positions anyway depend lot more on accuracy of HRTF.
Hence customizable HRTF would be advantage in that no matter the headphones.
Simply because headphones can never create something not existing in the signal driving them.

Because of better comfort I've lately used mostly DT990.
Beyer's velour pads are simply softer and because of manual head band adjustment they don't rely also on pressure to stay in place.
Unlike AKG's "automatically adjusting" head band.
For music you would likely want to drop 8kHz band 4-5dBs in equalizer for DT990.
But neither are AKGs any treble covering headphones.

Thanks for going into such detail.

I've read a lot about amps in the past few days and the general consensus is that gamer audio products (g6) are worse than audio products in the same price bracket (k5 pro). They also explain that although gamer products like the g6 will get higher end products loud they wont control the drivers as well as something like a k5 pro thus giving less detail.

As for the k712 on the g6 Vs k5 pro. How much of a detail difference will there be compared between the two? The k712 is apparently overly bright on top of exacerbating the central imaging flaw when the headphones aren't powered properly.

Thanks

I'm using X2s right now (having had 58x, K712 and DT990 in the past). Think they are praised as 'fun' headphones for gaming. Soundstage seems wide and they have the convenient use of the VModa Mic. Makes them a decent 'fun' headset imho.

58x had far better imaging - I could pin point enemies etc better but for me the trade off was they sounded much narrower/closed which I didn't like.

I'm tempted to go back to the DT990 if I'm honest - but the non removable cable and need to add a mod mic (and extra cable) put me off.

How did you like the k712? Was the imaging good for a wide soundstage?

I don't like the imaging on the k712, its wide but average on accuracy. The HD 58X are very good for accuracy but lacking on stereo. If you pair with HRTF though they are really good IMO. If stereo gaming though the k712 would be better.

Hmm. Isn't that the trade off in general when in comes to narrow Vs wide soundstage? You either have great imaging on a narrow soundstage or good/average imaging on a wide soundstage with the advantage of knowing how far footsteps are away from you.

How "average" would you say imaging is on the k712? Do you not get positional audio at every number around the clock (bar central imaging)?

I could probably get the 6xx which had a similar soundstage to the 58x but again I'm unsure if I'll like it.

have those three headphones (712, HD6xx and HD58x) IMO 712 are amazing for gaming. Personally have no issues in gaming being able to pick up footsteps with them, 702's were slightly clearer but prefer the 712's elevation at the lower levels preferably, ohhh and ear pads are divine.

6xx and 58x are amazing all around IMO but do not excel in some areas like others. The 6xx is fairly smooth with a smaller soundtage then the 712, but still very clear. 58x have slightly more energy I find and the bass has more impact (though not more clear vs the 6xx). The 58x however is slightly less clear the the 6xx and a bit more grainy (comparatively) Both 6xx and 58x however do have a more narrow soundstage vs the 712 (and 702) but by no means do they feel closed in IMO.

If I personally had to buy only one of the three above, 6xx would be my choice due to fact all around amazing headphones. Disadvantage though is hard to send back (along with 58x) if you don't like them (though they do sell for most thier resale price on ebay) while 712 can easily be picked up in UK.

Abit all above is in stereo not 5.1 and all that stuff. Likewise all my opinion, everyone prefers something slightly different in this game.

Not necessarily some headphones do have both, my HD800s have both in spades. A very wide soundstage but at the same time have very good imaging, but then in a slightly different category.

The soundstage is always something I worry about when almost pulling the trigger on the 6xx. People online say they're very narrow and best for music and not gaming.

I feel as though for my use case the 712 would be the "safer" choice, I just wish I could try the 650/6xx as if I found them fine for gaming I know I'd love them for music.

Depending on the game I'll probably use the SBX feature in the g6 while using direct mode for music.

Is the imaging on the 712 solid around the clock (aside from central)? The only issue I had with the x2 is the dog **** imaging sounded almost 2d.

I'd love hd800s buuut I don't have £500 to blow on a used pair and probably more to replace pads lol.

Personally 58x Vs 6xx I'd just shell up the extra £50 and get the 6xx. I don't buy into the 58x hype as much as others

not had any issues with imaging on the 712 from any direction, everything is pretty clear to me in terms of where it is coming from. Heard better, sure but not bad.

in respect to 58X, imo they are astonishingly good for the price. They have been hyped slightly, but for their price they are extremely good so can easily see why people do rave about them. With the 6XX though being just a little bit more as you mentioned offers another flavour. I know some prefer the 58x signature so in their case an absolute bargain.

Can you link what plug I'd have to buy with the k5 pro?

what do you mean by plug? Afaik buying from a UK site would mean it comes with the relevant UK plug in the box.

if your talking about headphone jack, it uses a 1/4 jack and most half decent headphones including ones mentioned above (712 pro, HD6xx, 58x etc) all come with a 1/4 adaptor in the box.
Derp quoted wrong person

I have a K5 Pro and can recommend it.
Using K702's and came from an Asus STX sound card.

Great boost for music especially in the bass. Far more detailed and deeper sound.
Gaming I didnt notice much of a difference really, except again bass was improved (so explosions sounded much deeper than before for example)

Can you link what plug I'd have to buy with the k5 pro?

Got that as well as an AKG712 and a Tin P1, It's pretty good for music and films, it has good bass impact and mids with a little less treble detail and a pretty intimate sound stage. Gaming is OK, but you loose some detail and positional accuracy. Amazing performance for the price.

Is the positional audio better on the 598/599? They tend to go for £100 on black Friday. I know they have a larger stage compared to the 58x.
