Hi Folks,

I have been saving up for some speakers and have had my eye on these puppies.

'Creative GigaWorks 7.1 S750 THX® Speakers - Retail (SP-027-CL)'

Could anybody recommend these? I currently have the 'SB Audigy 2 ZS Pro'
My Age old desktop theatre set up doesn't seem to be fully compatible with My Zs pro. So I ain't getting proper surround sound in movies or games. I guess they will primarily be used for movies anyway. Are these a good set or are there any others people could recommend?

Cheers

B

Hey Benny,

I have a set of Megaworks 550s which I have had for a while and the sound they produce is good enough for me - it doesnt compare to spending money on decent Hi-Fi speakers but they were well worth the money for gaming & movies.

I found on the 5.1's that the bass could get slightly overpowering for the people living above/below/around me at uni so I had to turn that down when I was going for a bit of a frag fest but apart from that I've had no complaints about the system.

I'm running my speakers through the Audigy 2 Platinum eX and am also very happy with this.

I have the gigaworks s750s and imo they are very good. VERY loud and clear:) you will have to turn the sub down at high volume or you may find things falling of shelves.

Hahaaha....yeah I figured they would be loud, specifically the sub. Hmm it is a lot of spending beans to part with but I figure you don't buy speakers every other year. Thanks for the feedback guys (no pun intended).

they are great set of speakers (if they keep working), just one word of warning though, the chances are that the sub will give up within a year.

Go to the forums on the Creative website & do a search for S750 & see how many people have had problems, some are on their 2nd or 3rd refurb. sub from Creative.

I only found this out myself when my sub blew 10 months from purchase.
There would appear to be a 'design fault' in it but Creative wont admit it, also they have VERY bad customer service.

Better of buying the Logitec speakers.

If your thinking of spending £250 on speakers you should be looking at hi fi separates. Not Creative PC speakers.

While I cant give you any specific models and the best place to buy from is a competitor I'll just say this:

A decent set of hi fi separates with a good amp will demolish any PC speakers especially when you have £250 to spend.

Would that be 5.1 or 7.1 surround sound? I appreciate that seperates would produce better sound quality. I don't know a great deal about seperates or connectivity. I guess that is why my focus has been on a ready made set of speakers. I guess it can be likened to buying a prebuilt system. That is something I now would never ever do. Possibly I should transfer my focus on buying a seperates set up. Thing is as I have said I know very little about what is a good set of speakers or amp. I just know once I start I will end up spending more. You get into the mode of 'well I'm going to spend x amount, another 50 quid will get me a better quality amp'.

If you are considering separates one of the best places to go would be your local Richer Sounds as they will be able to give you friendly advice.

If this doesnt work out then the Gigaworks will be a decent alternative

Just had a look on that website.
Spherex XBOX (X-Box, Active 5.1 Speaker Package) for 199

Also

JVC RX5062
(AV Receiver) £99.95

GALE SILVER MONITOR
(Per Pair) £59.95 You'd need 2 pairs og these £120

GALE STORM 8
(Subwoofer) £59.95

Might consider a centre speaker too?

A friend of mine recently revamped his 5.1 home theatre system and bought:

Wharfedale 9.4 Cherry (Front L&R)
Celestion F10 Dark Apple (Rear L&R)
Celestion F35C Dark Apple (Centre)

He already had a Yamaha sub & amps but u can get hold of these fairly easily.

Honestly, the best thing to do if you are considering this is to speak to the guys in the shops as they can advise you best. Give them a budget and let them guide you through what they have

You should be able to get a seperates surround setup for under £250 if you go second hand. By buying large enough front speakers, you may well not require the sub (floorstanders in particular).

Thanks for the input guys,

I reckon the seperates is a better route to go. I will pop into the richer sounds near me. I think chelsea is going to be the closest. I reckon it will be better as I will be able to have a listen to some of the stuff already set up and gauge it against what I may buy. The only thing is that I haven't factored in the cost of the cables......I guess they will be near 50 sheets also. I may stall my purchase until I can get a few more beans together. Though a trip down town this w/e is probably on the cards now. I wil see what they say and what they advise. Then see what to do. I know what I am like. Budgets go out of the window once I get there. Might be best to buy it in bits. Get a good AMP first then add the rest on.

Cheers again guys.....( I will check out some of the stuff you have mentioned here too)

Benny,

you can always start having a 2.0 system then work from there to get 4.0 then 5.1 - if you are missing out on low end then whack the bass on the amp up to +5 and let the speakers do the job. As long as they are matched they will cope.

With cables it is *REALLY* worthwhile getting better cables as the "bellwire" will not give as good sound quality as the OFC cables.

If you get some HiFi speakers make sure u post a photo of the finished rig!

Yeah MattyWhi,

I think I might do that, as I say get a good solid amp then just add to it. My mate at work has put a nice 5.1 system together. Soundproofed garage the monty. Sounds very impressive. Although I won't be going to such lengths I think it is about time I had a nice sound system as I have my system as I want it. Just need a nice sound set up to complement it. When it is finished I will get some pics posted too. I will take a bit of time over what AMP to get. My mate has a Yamaha, unsure of the Model Number but he assures me it has every bell and whistle you could want. We had a look today but the one that was available on ricghers site was abotu 470. This is the newer model of his. Think that might be a bit too much for me. Oh and my mate says it is worth forking out for good wiring, I'm sure he will help me choose some good kit. It's always easier spending someone elses cash huh?
