I have a set of 5.1 Digital 5700 speakers which ive had for 16 years of trouble free service and now they've started playing up. I connect them to my PC through a optical cable and tonight i cant get any sound out of them. My sound card is definitely outputting sound as i can hear it through headphones. Same problem when connecting my Xbox through optical cable. Any ideas?

I got same problem on my New Windows 10 Pro thanks to stupid Microcraps Driver updates.

I don't know whether to laugh or not, that Microsoft are still managing to break sound in Windows 10 after 5 years. Anyone would think they don't know what they are doing. ;)

Did they replace all their programmers with people on work experience?

I've never seen as many people complain about broken sound in Windows as much as 10. I think 10 even outdoes Vista in that regard. Any sound issues people had with 7 and 8/8.1 pale in comparison to 10. :p

OP; do you have a dedicated sound card, or are you using the motherboard audio?

I'm using a sound card, Sound Blaster AE-5. Never had a problem with it before. I'm having the same issue when I connect the Xbox to the speaker system through optical cable also which makes me think it's the speakers.

I've been fiddling with the the last few days to try and get them to work and nothing. Perhaps time for a change.

Looks like it's the speakers then, if connecting them to the console, you still get nothing. Lot less to go wrong with sound from a console compared to a Windows PC.

If you need 5.1 speakers with digital input, only choices are Logitech Z906 or get an AV receiver and 5.1 speaker package. Depends what you want to spend really. Just for gaming though, the Z906 will do the job fine.

Speakers are likely failing because of capacitors going bad.
Doubtfull those were high quality ones in the first place and now they've certainly had time to start wear down.
That makes voltages unstable and rises ripple, which eventually makes digital electronics stop working, if not frying something.
Changing capacitors could get it working again.

If you're gaming lot on PC Creative has very good binaural sound simulation and you can get good immersion with good headphones.

Microsoft knows exactly what they're doing:
Screwing consumers into rear while making them pay for it...

I miss the time when Gates was at Microsoft's helm.
At least then Windows was developed for computers and there were some quality standards.

I've chosen to ditch the 5.1 option and go with 2.1 instead, less clutter on my desk. Shame to see the old Creatives go as i've had them a long time, certainly had my moneys worth out of them.

Decided to go with these, be interesting to see how they perform. Unfortunately not through Overclockers though as they're out of stock.

I think you've made a much better choice, than going for Creative again. Kratos S5 in particular; I've seen quite a few people having issue with those speakers. They might cost £100, but they look cheap and nasty.

Edifier make some good speakers and those S350DB's certainly look better quality than most 2.1 speakers. I know you'd expect that with them being 2.5x the price of the Kratos S5, but even if Creative had some £200 2.1 speakers, I wouldn't be surprised if they were cheap and nasty in some way. I think it's been a long time since Creative made anything decent in the way of speakers.

Had the Edifier speakers delivered over the weekend and what a difference they make over the old creatives. Music sounds so much better and game play is pretty good also. Very impressed with them and the extra desk is a bonus.
