Creative/Logitech - How much cable on their surround sound speakers?

Excuse my ignorance, but how is the cable extended? I assume you simply cut the cable, splice some new cable to it then splice on the end you cut off?

If that is correct..

What cable is it best to use (I assume cheap = not shielded?)
How do you splice the cable together?

Many Thanks.

I personally haven't had to do it specifically to PC speakers but having done it with my Hi-Fi, you simply cut the speaker cable half way along and get a couple of screw-on audio connectors from your typical high street electrical retailer whose name begins with "M". They're little white plastic blocks with tiny screws to clamp down the wire. As far as the cable goes, you're very unlikely to get decent cable with PC speakers and very expensive cable is mostly a waste of money anyway. I'd wait for the speakers to arrive and go down to your typical high street electrical retailer whose name begins with "M" and get the closest match cable-wise, but it'll probably be very thin and cheap.
