Creative Sound Blaster® X-Fi Xtreme Gamer + Logitech Z-5500

I'm expecting a new PC soon which has the Creative Sound Blaster® X-Fi Xtreme Gamer fitted, and I want to upgrade my speakers so I can get better sound in pc games but also have the option of connecting my XBOX360 and possibly a few other things to the speakers.

So my question is, even though the SB can output 7.1 will it still work with a set of 5.1 speakers? (apologies if this is a daft question )
