creative soundcard issue?

I've recently started to have problems with what appears to be my speakers but also the soundcard on my machine. When i increase the volume using a dial that is attached to both speakers - not directly, but through wires - the volume on the left speaker does not increase much, and it crackles. I plugged some bose headphones onto the headphone port on the dial and i experience the same problem with the headphones if i increase the volume using the dial.

the wiring seems ok, and has not been under stress,i even loosened some of it to be sure and its fine. The headphones also make it clear that the volume is alwyas lower on the left chanel than on the right

im using a creative soundblaster audigy SE on vista 64, is it the soundcard thats the issue here?

Very probably volume adjustment of speakers is crapping out.
Bad/worn out potentiometer causes often such crackle when adjusted and channels having own resistors inside potentiometer that would also explain lower volume of left channel... in fact it fits well to crackles of that channel.

is there any way to fix this or at leats make it less apparent? is speant good money on the speakers, about 90, and this has really annoyed me that its happened quite soon

Obvious question - check your volume control on the computer, and make sure that the bar isn't set so that more sound is going to the right speaker than the left.

- Huw
