Hey guys,

This morning I had two texts on my phone claiming to be Halifax saying along the lines of:

“Halifax has noticed your Halifax MasterCard card ending **** was used online on 25-07-2018 03:05:00, at GMO Trading for £180.00. This payment has not been debited from your account. Please confirm if this transaction was made by you by replying Yes or No. Replying with Yes will NOT cause the payment to debit your account.”

Panicking as I’d only just woken up I replied no, but I googled the number that came back in the “Thank you, we’ll attempt to contact you between 08:00-17:00. If out of hours please call us on 03330459642“

The number throws up a load of bank scam posts and warnings so I immediately dismissed the fact my card was used online.

But I’m a little concerned they were able to tell I have a Halifax MasterCard and know the last 4 digits. Should I be worried? Or is that information relatively easy to get via websites selling useless info, as I get that if that’s all they have then they can’t do anything with it

Thanks

To be blunt, rather than jumpin to the internet, I’d speak to Halifax and tell them what’s gone on and see what their opinion is.

I will but last time I had something like this and called them, they immediately cancelled my card as a precaution and sent out a new one.

I’d rather not have that if it’s just a harmless attempt at a scam

They do that for a very good reason, your card to their mind is most likely compromised.

My sister and brother in law both work for HSBC and are constantly banging on to whoever will listen about anything slightly odd/suspicious showing on your card / account by whatever means, report it and get new cards, they deal with this **** daily.

Ok will call up just to be safe. Was hoping a quick “to the internet” post would tell me its harmless :p

Surely the question is whether you made a transaction at "GMO Trading" for £180?

I've had the exact same messaging from them before, but this was after making a payment to said place.

If you've not made payment to GMO trading, then it's more than likely a scam.

Rang Halifax and turns out it was in fact genuine and it’s an issue with people reporting their number as a scam.

He thinks it’s a compromise due to the recent ticketmaster hack. Either way card cancelled.

Mods can close as I was being an idiot and not ringing first

I don't give my bank my mobile phone number. So they call the house phone from the fraud department and ask me if I made such and such transaction on a particular date (usually within 24 hours of having made the transaction). Then they usually ask did you also purchase A and B. When I say yes then thats the end of the call.
