credit cards and buying online

Found myself a nice 42 inch panasonic plasma tv at Curry's online ,so used my halifax master card (credit card) ,3 days later I check my online order status which says authorisation needed .
So I contact halifax and after much frustrating button pushing ,I'm told Curry's has to contact halifax ,then Curry's tell me I have to go back to halifax again and I'm passed backwards and forwards and told its a security measure .

They did the same thing a few weeks ago when I tried to make an online purchase .Security is one thing but Halifax made no attempt to contact me and they are preventing me from buying online and I ended up losing it on the phone and telling them where to stick the credit card

Ended up paying with debit card

Just wondering if anyone else has had problems using credit cards online ?

first time i used my barclay card they just phoned me to ask if it was me who made the order and that was all the communication i had with them until i cancelled the card because they doubled my APR even though i always paid double the minimum payment each month

I have a RBS cred card, I dont use it much mind. But for online purchases some websites require me to authorise the card with a password I have setup.

Nice added security check imo.

Credit cards are handy if you know how to use it. i.e. have the cash available already. I use it to buy on-line as it comes with guarantees my debit card doesn't, but I buy on the credit card then put the money in the "waiting" account, so I know I have "already" paid for it.

As for OP - it may be annoying but it is for your own good, as hard as it is to see. I have had fraudulent transactions flagged like that and saved me hassle, although I do agree its bad service when they don't contact you and push you around.

lol fair enough.

tbh I dont use it enough to care less anyways :)

Only use it on websites from US or Japan that only accept visa or mastercard :D

No, its a extra layer of security which requires another piece of information which someone who cloned your card or got your details is unlikely to know.

To be honest in your case sounds like there online link had gone down. A very popular provider of chip and soultions had network issues so , had to revert back manaul auth ;)

unless it was obtained via a keylogger which is probably the case, not all sites use verified by visa anyway so anyone who clones CC for a living would know where to avoid

Ahh, but you need to have the full password as it only asks you for a few characters. If you are going to log all of the 3 character inputs you need to a) know repititions b)know the length of the password c) the position of the characters.

This is not trivial stuff. Not unbreakable but enough to scare most of the pros off.

Yep I had to do that with curry's but still not good enough for halifax and even when I contacted halifax to complain and curry's tried again the next day it was refused again .
