Looking to go with my partner maybe to Crete for a belated 2 week break at the end of the month.
I just wondered if anyone had been there recently and what the general restaurant food prices are and the choice available, especially at that time of the season.

My partner wants to go self catering while I would perhaps prefer all inclusive at a decent 4/5* rating hotel - looking at some of the late deals, it wouldn't cost much more to go AI over the costs of self catering.
I can see her point as it means we wouldn't get to eat out and experience the local culture but, how many of the restaurants etc are still open in early October?

I've not been to Crete in October, but I've been to Rhodes mid-October and that has similar climate and holiday season so I can have a stab.
When I did Rhodes at that time of year everything was still open, business as usual. Greece relies hugely on tourism when it comes to the economy, so they have to milk it for all it's worth before the end of the season - hence very few places will be shutting down early, except perhaps in some of the more remote/quieter resorts.

I went to Crete this June. Most taverna prices are between 7€ (for generic fare like spag bol/lasagne etc) up to 15€ for fish, steaks. Most stuff (mousaka, stifado, calamari) hovered around the 10€ mark. Large beer 2-3€, wine a little bit cheaper. You get the picture.

I would never in a million years consider AI in Greece. Greece is all about basic accomodation - the smaller the better - and eating out in local tavernas, speaking to the people and so on. It's worth having a think about why these all inclusives on offer are only a little bit more expensive than self catering too.

I went to Crete in october, it was very hot (over 30degrees) on most of the week - we stayed hald board in the Minos Beach Art hotel, it comes highly recommended if you have deep pockets!

The local tavernas are great, try and findg some proper greek ones rather than a westernised tourist hole, the food is totally different.

Just came bk from that hotel last week!
Drinks prices...

Just come back from Manos apartments in Elounda. The hotel and town are brilliant, not that much night-life but that's not what we wanted. I think Crete has to be our favourite holiday location, so laid back!

Elounda was very quiet when we visited in September 08. We took a day trip to agonis nikolaos which was much better and more lively. We much prefer Rhodes though, lindos and Rhodes town in particular.
