Crete

Any suggestions on where to stay in Crete, and what to do?

We're currently looking at the northwest (Hania? Chania? Khania?) as this seems to have a nice mix of a port in the town and beaches nearby. Also it's close to the gorge to the south, and some decent sounding temples etc. We'll probably give everywhere east of Heraklion a miss as it sounds really touristy.

Also is it easy to get tours / buses around to see sights? We're not keen on hiring a car and driving out there.

Stalis is nice and quiet I would highly recommend it. Loads of other quiet little villages to go to near by as well

i went to rethymo a couple of weeks back. it was gorgeous but not quite the picture perfect beaches (pebbly in quite a lot of places) and villages (loads of unfinished bits). there are good buses and taxis there, but its an hour taxi from either airport...
on the plane home many people regretted going to malia as its was apparantly really cheap and cheesey and not relaxing at all. full of scousers and stag parties..
nice and sunny though! got tremendously sunburnt and would go again.
